ESSAY 1
The theory that I chose to use is Client Centered Therapy. The C.C.T. Was developed by Carl Rogers in the 40's and 50's. Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois. His therapy is a non-directive therapy also known as Rogerian therapy or client centered therapy. Like Psychotherapy that places responsibility for the treatment on the client and the therapist have a nondirective approach. This also means that the therapist behavior deliberately steers the client in some way. Directive behaviors include asking questions, offering treatments, and making interpretations and diagnoses.
Carl Rogers introduction of the term client, rather than, patient to express his rejection of the traditionally authoritarian relationship between therapist and client and his view of them as being equal. The client determines the direction of the therapy. Rogers states that individuals are the architects of their own life. This form of humanistic therapy deals with the ways in which people perceive themselves consciously rather than having a therapist try to interpret unconscious …show more content…
thoughts or ideas. Rogers theory also does not require any testing or a any analyzing.
The main three attitudes that Rogers says the therapist should have is Congruence, Unconditional Positive Regard, and empathy.
The initial goals of the person-centered therapy would be to increase awareness within the client. The therapist role would be to seek to increase thee client’s insight within himself or herself. Also the job of the therapist is to help the client get to self-understanding through informal clarifying questions. The therapist is only used as an instrument for the change of the client. Through being genuine, having respect, and showing the client that you care will allow them to let down their defenses. The therapist is also should also reflect back to the client the clients view of the
word.
Rogers believe that we are valued and rewarded for certain behaviors. These rewards direct our behaviors, (e.g. when I smile, I’m cuddled, when I cry I’m fed). Rogers also believe that when and as we grow conflicts occur which we must choose between our needs and our urges. Also, between behaviors that leads to reward and acceptance.
The possible advantages of person centered therapy:
1. Better understanding, and have belief in one self
2. Reduction in anxiety, condition and feelings of panic
3. Decreased depression
4. Enhancement of self worth
5. Diminished guilty feelings
6. Overwhelming sense of transformation
