Poverty means lack in the position of money in the individual or the society which prevents them to have the basic needs of living like food, water, and shelter. Every country in the world has a percentage of poverty that shows how the country’s economy is affecting the people’s life. I lived with a woman who was born and raised in Germany and she and her family went through the holocaust. Some nights I would be setting outside and she would come to me and tell me stories about her past and how that poverty in her past has changed her life as of who she is right now. She would tell me about the nights that she had to sleep while she was hungry because she only got the chance to eat once a day. Also, she would tell me about how her house would always be dark because they do not want their house to get destroyed from the air strikes. She would tell me about how she only had one outfit that she wore for the whole year. She would tell me about so many things that if I start writing about it, It would not be enough to write on a paper. However, I can see why her house has always lights on and how her closets are full of clothes. How her cabinets and fridges are full of food that you could eat from everyday and will never end. I can see that she is scared to go back to the life that she lived before and I do not blame her. Living the poverty life must be the worst and hardest thing that a human being can do because he or she is not suppose to be living like …show more content…

The average income of America in the year 2006 is $48,201. ("Annual") but, why does poverty exist in our country? Everyday you wake up and see streets that are filled with cars, houses, buildings, stands, plants, and animals, but have you ever noticed a homeless family or starving children on the street? The truth is, poverty is around us, and we are oblivious to it. People need to realize that poverty is a growing epidemic. I have seen some families living in their cars, and eating from garbage. I have seen old men beg for change in the streets. There are people freezing at night, who sleep in cardboard boxes. There are children starving in our country everyday, stealing food just to stay alive. Where are these people? Why are they in poverty?…

There are many books out giving solutions and theories as to how to go about putting an end to poverty in the United States. Books like Senator and presidential candidate John Edward's Ending Poverty in America: How to restore the American Dream, academic economist Jeffrey Sachs's The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time and Robin Marris's Ending Poverty are unproven, unimpressive and unrealistic dreams of how our society should go about eliminating poverty. We need poor people in our society to maintain a solid, functioning economy on local, state and federal levels.…

Poverty is one of the most serious issues in the United States today. Those that are affected were once the minority of society is now emerging as the majority. The new faces of poverty would surprise many people. It is no longer the face of the pleading face of a middle-aged man on a city street holding up a sign that says “Hungry, Need Help.”, or the face of a young child in a classroom, whose only real meal today will be a free school lunch. It is also the sad face of a single mother who doesn’t have enough money to buy clothes for her children.…

Throughout the last century, poverty has been a major issue in the society of the United States. The government has tried to help those who are living in poverty through numerous acts including Franklin D. Roosevelt's plans to get the country out of the depression or the welfare reform in 1996. Although the government has sought to ease poverty, mainly by creating government anti poverty programs, their methods are in fact ineffective. The Federal governments anti poverty programs as a majority is not working, the programs may very well work for a few people out of thousands, but that is unquestionably not enough. Furthermore the government's methods to eliminate poverty have caused people to become dependent on government anti poverty…

Poverty is a major issue throughout our country that needs to be changed immediately. We all whether upper, middle or lower class co-exist in the same country. We all live to help one another develop educationally, mentally ,financially. So to live in a country where we shame those who make lower incomes. I view poverty as a disease that needs to be eliminated entirely. And as an evolving society we must realize that until we fix the issues right in our backyards. We will never reach that feeling of self-actualization. Allowing us to always feel broken and insecure and dissatisfied with the lives that we…
