Personal History: Case Study: Troy Withers '
BACKGROUND
Troy Withers is a 53-year-old single man who resides on Chevron Island although he said he spends most of his time at his mother's residence at Carrara. He is employed full time in the Green Life section of the local Masters hardware suppliers store. He has been there for four years and had become the manager, but 18 months ago he stepped down to the position of tradesman advisor in the landscaping section.
According to the letter of permission, Mr Withers enlisted with the Navy on 10.04.1978 and served until 20.10.1981. He has recruit training at HMAS Leeuwin from 10.04.1978 to January 1979. He subsequently served at HMAS Cerberus, HMAS Stalwart, HMAS Kuttabul, HMAS Adelaide, and HMAS Penguin. He was "dishonourably discharged unsuitable on 20.10.1981". He reports that he commenced drug use in about 1978-1979 and by the time he was discharged he was drug-dependent. This continued until 5-6 years ago. He commenced drinking alcohol to excess shortly after leaving the Navy, and he continues to do this. He is the youngest of three children to Shirley (domestic duties) and Dallas (engineer). He has an older brother Clint who is an unemployed brick layer, and an older sister Tracey who is a social worker. Mr Withers said that he had a good childhood. He cannot recall much of PNG but the later years on the Gold Coast were good. He had a supportive relationship generally with his parents. He described his father as a conservative standoffish man who did not show much affection but he was involved in the family and activities. Her mother was not affection woman. There was no significant domestic
