Dr. Zakir Husain, was an Indian statesman, the 3rd President of India, and the first Muslim to hold the largely ceremonial position of President of India. His tenure was the shortest, serving only 2 years due to his sudden death in 1969.
Dr. Zakir Husain was born to an upper middle class family in Hyderabad, into a Pashtun family. His father, Fida Husain Khan, passed away when he was 10 and mother, Naznin Begum, when he was 14. In 1915, at the age of 18, he married Shah Jahan Begum and had two daughters, Sayeeda Khan and Safia Rahman.

Husain became vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, which was facing trying times in post partition India because of active involvement of a section of its teachers and students in the movement for creation of Pakistan. The World University Service made him the Chairman of the Indian National Committee and in 1954 he was elected the World President of the organization. Husain was steeped in the spiritual and aesthetic culture and the ethical principles of the Muslim Sufis and poets. He upheld the highest moral values and lived up to them. He believed in democracy with individual freedom and self-discipline. He was one of the most prominent educational thinkers and practitioners of modern India. He strongly believed in the fact that national renaissance could not be attained through active politics all alone.
