Personal Narrative: A Career As A Police Officer
I think that this question is great. This is not something that I have really thought about. Honestly, I do not feel like I use my strengths every day. I believe that I am good at interacting with people and I have a pretty good attention to detail when it comes to my work. Since being promoted to supervisor, I have not really gotten to use those skills as much as I would like. In the past, I would get to talk to drivers and their previous employers on a daily basis. I was usually good at getting information from the previous employers that they were not required to give and I did a pretty good job of making drivers feel more relaxed. Since being promoted, most of my work consists of doing paperwork and making sure everyone else is doing what they are supposed to. Sometimes I miss being on the front lines. Growing up, I wanted to be a police officer because I felt my skills would be very useful in that position. Due to the dangers of the position, my wife had her worries and I just sort of drifted away from that. Sometimes I still think of what might have been. Would I have been …show more content…
Your career sounds pretty interesting. I have never been very interested in machinery or knowing how things work. I sure am glad that there are people out there who do though. I have always wanted to do some sort of civil service. In high school, my dream jobs were police officer, firefighter or teacher. I did not really want to go to college, so that kind of put teacher out of reach. I did not want to work for free, so that sort of ruined firefighter because I didn't want to start as a volunteer. I couldn't be a police officer until I was 21, so I decided to join the military. I came out of the military more confused than I was in high school. I am still hoping that someday I will figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I also hope that someday you can get back to a role where you are teaching since that is where your heart

I have learned from my areas of growth and turned them into strengths.. I try to stay quiet and not talk about dumb things or just keep quiet in general. Also, my impatience has actually helped me learn how to deal with certain people and work certain jobs. Now instead of getting mad and upset from little kids not listening I just learn to take their attention away from whatever they are doing wrong. My strength, of trying to get the job done that is put in front of me, has helped me become better prepared for the real world and what is to come after high school and college. Other strengths which were the inability to say no has helped me do well when working outside of…

On Monday, April 11, I went on a Ride-A-Long with Officer Jim Brooks who is a sergeant at the Taneytown police department. Initially, I was supposed to do the ride-a-long on Friday, April 8, However, Officer Brooks contacted me a few days before, explain to me that they had changed his shift and asked to reschedule the ride- along (which we did, till Monday April 11). This shows how flexible the police staff is, with changes occurring constantly and how they do not have consistent schedules. There are 5 shifts at the station, which each officer works. Taneytown, Maryland is about 2.5 square miles. The police station was built in November of 2002 and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. For each community within and…

It had been a few days since the occurrence of the incident on June 10th. In these few days after the event, I feel both physically tormented and emotionally distressed. It might have been the shock of the event that I unconsciously undermined the physical impact that the fall, tumble and rolling has on my body. The following morning after the incident, purple bruises surfaced in the left knee area, muscle pain and soreness on my left arm and both legs that weren't visible nor noticeable that night. In addition, I feel that I am emotionally traumatized by that night's incident. I can sense that I am on the brink of a mental breakdown. The things that I thought I could have neglect and the negative feelings that I…

Sweat came down my nose dripping like if I were sweating bullets. I was being put to the test both mentally and physically, and I never expected it to be this hard. I was being yelled at receiving all the attention to keep going and not stopping. Even though I'm going through this, I stayed motivated, thinking to myself that I can do one more. At the end of the day, I reminded myself of a Navy Seal instructor saying, “Whatever you have to do, just find an excuse to win, keep going.” Just these few words made me survive the night and find that reason to keep going. Now I know what it takes to be on the California highway patrol.…

When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. I would need to learn from their failures. Most importantly, I would need to learn what made them…

At the tender age of eighteen, I began my career as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Corrections at the Ellis I Unit in Huntsville, Texas, a town with population of only about 30,000 people, but with seven prisons and more than 13,000 inmates. I attended a lengthy and thorough pre-service training academy that was conducted for eight hours every day for two weeks. All trainees were required to live in dormitories together as a group so we could sleep, eat, breathe, and drink corrections. There were about fifty trainees going through the academy at the same time. We were an interesting bunch with about half of the group being young guys like me looking for their first real job and the other half being forty-something military or law enforcement retirees wanting to pursue a new career. There were no women in my academy class. Women at the time could be found in support positions that were primarily clerical, but would not play a direct contact role in male corrections in Texas until 1984 (US Department of Justice, 1991).…
