Personal Narrative: A Career In Speech Pathology
Before this year, I never really had career goals. I was always jealous of my peers that seemed to have their whole lives planned out, while I hopped from one career path to another, never able to make up my mind. At first I tried pediatrics, then I thought maybe an attorney, or a physician's assistant? I had no clue. The only thing that had guided me thus far was my desire to have a career that was a little "off the beaten path" but at the same time gave me a platform to help others. I found this in Speech Pathology. While a speech pathologist is not that crazy of a gig, I enjoy the fact that I can work in a lot of diverse environments with all ages of people.     I knew that I would probably go to college some where in state, come back to our little town and work as a nurse or in an office like my mom or nana. My computer teacher had us go on a website and answer a couple of questions to see what my range of my possibilities is, and of course one of the first ones was a nurse and human resources. Then I started looking deeper into the possibilities I had. The two I found most interesting were Epidemiology and Sociology. Both sounded very intriguing and in both professions I would be able to help people. I started to look at epidemiology, I noticed that if I would work really hard at it I would be able to work at the CDC (Center for Disease Control). It looked very interesting and the job outlook is very high. So my chances of getting a job is very likely. But as I looked for jobs at the CDC there was next to nothing. I still decided to do the presentation on it though. The presentation was very fun but presenting was a little scary. As the year progressed though I learned that in order for me to be able to become an epidemiologist I would have to enter an internship for at least a year then work my way up from a small college lab to the CDC.
