As my mom pulled our mini van off the highway, and into the hospital parking lot, I started to get a sick feeling in my stomach like an animal was crawling inside.
I was starting to get worried because I was going to get surgery on my testicle. I was a pre-mature baby and I had to get three hernia operations when I was little. Now, my testicle had floated up into the scar tissue left from my three surgeries. I was with my mom and my grandma. My …show more content…
brother was at school and my dad was at work. I was glad to have my mom with me.
Once we arrived there I was really afraid. I showed up to the front desk. It was blue with a brown counter top and in the wall was a fish tank filled with vibrant fish. There was also a statue of a submarine. Once we checked in they handed me a tag that showed my name.
Once my mom and I arrived in the in the elevator all the levels were a different sea creature like whale or fish or star fish.
We went to the fish floor. The hospital was all ocean themed. I liked it. It took my mind of the surgery. Then we arrived in the waiting room. It had blue walls and some tables with windows. The buildings outside made it look gloomy and cloudy. A couple minutes later, they called me. So I popped up and walked into the room were I found out my height. The nurse showed me that I was in room number six. When I sat down the nurse came in and I asked some questions. I was most scared about the IV but they explained there was only an IV when I woke up. They assured me that I would not feel it. Instead they were going to use a gas to put me out. So I was not as afraid anymore. I was thinking, not a horrible as I thought. After 30 minutes my dad came in the room. It was cool. All green and blue with some coral painted on the wall. There was a curtain with green and tangerine coral with a blue background. Then the anesthesiologists came in and explained what was going to happen and I was not as frightened. Then they asked, "Are you
ready?"
I said a little worried," Ok...." Then they started wheeling me out and I whispered, "...a little anxious," to my mom. "Bye, I love you." I was wheeled away. As they wheeled me down the hallway I started thinking about the day this whole process started.
I was sitting at the doctor's office and he explained, "You will probably need surgery." I was scared. I was not ready for this. After some time, he had explained everything to us and I finally relaxed. Then that all went away when they said carefully that I needed an X-ray to see if blood was pumping in it. Now it was all happening and that x-ray seemed like a piece of cake.
As they wheeled me down the hall I saw a boy around 7or 8 years old that looked asleep. I started to get worried and asked the nurse, "Will I be ok?"
"Yes" she replied kindly.
"Ok," I said in barely a squeak.
I was wheeled in to the surgery room and horror stricken. I saw all the metal pointy tools. I smelled nothing but I tasted a stale flavor In my mouth. I got on the bed. It was warm and there were two glaring lights. then the anesthesiologists informed me that the gas would smell like bubble gum then like magic markers. As he put the gas mask over my mouth I stared at the lights in shock. I will be cut open in a minute no need to worry. Then it started to smell like magic markers. It smelled so vile I almost threw up. Blackness.
I woke up in the recovery room so uncomfortable, and covered in ice packs. I looked around and realized I was in a corner. Then my parents came in. I moaned. It was all over. After that I stayed at the hospital for a hour more.
Then I got pushed into a wheel chair and hauled to the mini van. I could see the dents from my brother in the car, which made me smile. I was so relieved. It felt like a weight off of my back. During the drive away from Lauries Children's Hospital on that warm October night, I thought about how the more you think of fear, the bigger the fear gets. This experience taught me so much and I will never forget it.
