“Marie, what do you know about 9/11?”
Marie was the chubbier girl with no height that I had called short-fatty. Guilt filled my every cell. Why was I such a jerk? I shook my head, I can’t possibly blame it on the town, or my father- who doesn’t exist. Marie contemplated her answer before speaking quietly down at her desk.
“On September 11th, 2001, the North and South towers of the world trade center were hit by hijacked planes, and eventually collapsed. The pentagon was also hit, and the fourth hijacked plane crashed in Pennsylvania.” She paused as we waited for her to continue. “That’s it.”
Mr. Mackley laid a hand on her desk, causing her look up. He gave her a smile.

The beast named Al Qaeda, had yet to reach out and claim the second tower. My thoughts rose from the ashes left behind and I knew I had to get out. This wasn’t even my time. I was not meant to be here. Not now, not this time, not this place. Somewhere in the world I was a baby; I was two years old in 2001. My mom would be helping me celebrate my birthday. Today was my birthday, September 11th. I had completely forgotten all about birthdays. They were never celebrated at my house ever since my mother cried when I turned five. I’m eighteen today in my normal time. Thinking about my age made me feel old. I feel old. I stifle my laughter as I remember where I am. I’m going to die. No, no I’m not. I’m going to leave right now. There is still about fifteen minutes before this tower is hit.
“Attention, there has been an incident on Building 1. Please remain on or return to your floors. Thank you.”
My mouth dropped.
