Personal Narrative: Abusive Relationships
2. “ I was at a party recently and Adrianne was there and she brought her cards. I heard she does readings at gatherings and her friends book her at their homes. She was doing readings away from the gathering and my friend told me to definitely have a reading. I am young, not even in my 20’s and she kept looking at me throughout the evening and on her breaks.
When I was able to sit with her she recognized a depressive tone in my voice and my actions. I told her a boyfriend recently broke up with me and did not treat me well. And no boyfriend ever treated me well most were abusive and then left me. She asked me if whatever showed up, could I handle the information and of course I said yes. Well then it hit, she said my father was an abuser

My mother, sister, and I were driving down Highway 124 on a hot July day when my mom screamed and slammed on the breaks. Fear rushed through our bodies. Outside the car window, a short young African American man was launched into the air. As he came down, a loud boom sounded as his body helplessly rolled off the hood of the faint green Toyota Corolla in front of us. The man lay motionless in the road while we waited for what seemed like hours for the driver to exit the car. His red shirt and gym shorts were ripped. The driver of the opposing car threw the vehicle in reverse in a spasmodic action in an attempt to end the man’s life. The injured man made an effort to crawl onto the Wendy’s sidewalk, forcing his body up on the curb to evade the car. The driver drove up onto the curb and blew its tire, just barely missing the wounded man. Realizing the driver would stop at nothing, my mother drove her white suburban in front of the car, blocking the violent perpetrator from doing any further damage.…

This was the scare of my life . I was cruising dirt roads in my jeep with a couple of friends, and we weren’t making very good choices that day . we were all drinking beer even though we were only 16, and I decided to try and show off for my friends and drift around a corner . Well needless to say that did not turn out very well at all. We made it around the corner and then i saw a truck coming our direction. So i tried to straighten it out before I should have and we slid out of control and hit the ditch while sliding sideways and hit a fence which caused us to start to tip over but somehow i turned the wheels just right and saved it . After we were back on all four tires we slid across the road and just barely missed the truck…

For a long time I harbored a large amount of resentment and anger towards that therapist for “making me feel like everything was my fault.” In reality, there is a good chance she had very good intentions and was trying to use a confronting technique with me. This may have been taught to her in graduate school, and worked with some of her other older, adult clients. This teaches me that it is important to not make snap judgements about others, especially before you really consider how and why they may have completed an action the way they…

I made it nearly nineteen years without enduring a traumatic experience. Yes, an affair leading into a divorce is considered a trauma. It’s extraordinary to think about how we take so much for granted - another belief we take for granted is that every night the stars will shine. When you wake up in the morning and make plans for the day, you never really contemplate those plans changing entirely in the blink of an eye. I had never thought much about it, personally, until I was faced with Death himself. I don't think anyone really contemplates tragedy until it knocks on their front door. In fact, it doesn’t even knock – it forces itself in and threatens to leave you with nothing but heartache and suffering for the remainder of your miserable life. Traumatic events can occur in numerous ways, at any time in one’s life. Some are lucky enough to get away with them. Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky.…

My confidence as a driver was diminished for a while during recovery from my first accident. I was often told I was a great driver for my age since I was 15 years-old. When I think about the accident I often ask myself should I have just stayed at the school that evening; was I wrong for going to support a loved one? It was definitely a traumatic experience that happened fast but felt as though it transpired dramatically slower than it did. After the accident was definitely a long dreadful process, that included it taking me almost two months to fully recover. It was unreal how an amazing day went bad and caused various consequences.…

Coming from an abusive home myself I personally know what the uncalled for causes and the dramatic effects of abuse are. During the ages of 5 until I was 16 my stepfather physically abused me almost daily. I get beat with a belt, a wire hanger, extension cords, wooden spoons or anything else he could get his hands on. I was 4 or 5 the first time it happened, he told me to clean my room and when he came to check on me I was not yet done. He then began to count to 10 and when he got there if I was not done he beat me. This would continue until my room was clean which seemed like an eternity but was more like 10 minutes. As I grew the beatings also grew and at some point when I was 13…

I would like to share my first experience with a bully; this event helped make me the man I am today. It also shaped my thoughts on my career choices. This one event led me to learn martial arts and with this discipline I became a more mature person. I first experienced bullying in daycare. Another child would often throw toys at me or hit me on the head when I was minding my own business. One day I decided to stand up for myself, and when he tried to hit me I threw a hotdog at him. He pushed me to the ground and started to hit me. All the other kids were laughing at me because I had gotten beat up by a younger child. Mrs. Kim, the owner of the daycare came over and took us both to her office. When we got there she talked…
