Personal Narrative: An Excellent Student Leadership Team
An outstanding student leadership team needs to be able to motivate the group to realize its potential. The most effective way to motivate people to accomplish the goals of the leaders is to ensure the followers understand how the leader’s goals will help them. The whole group needs to share a common goal. Leaders need to effectively communicate what that goal is, why it is relevant to everyone in the group, and what each member has to do in order to achieve that goal. It is vital to have goals and keep track of them, breaking them up into short-term goals. As a leader, my goal will be to prompt the band to perform at the highest level possible, making superior music along the way. This will help each member become a better musician and become better at operating as part of a team. Besides the common, long-term goal, each member has their own personal goal of what they want to reach during the season. An outstanding leadership team earns the right to be called leader through what they have done to be qualified and what they continually do. Leaders need to lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, discipline, and respect. They need to serve as role models for the rest of the band because what the members see will reflect in their own attitudes. Excellent leaders don’t assign work that they wouldn’t be willing to do. Thus, leaders need to work as diligently if not more so than everyone else to show what they expect from everyone else. For a productive season, leaders need to set the tone from day one. They need to create an environment where practice is taken seriously and breaks or other activities are enjoyable.
