Personal Narrative: Big Brother Big Sister
Big Brother Big Sister Volunteer Experience
Beginning of my junior year, my counselor came up to me about an emergency: Emelia Chen, a 5-year-old Chinese immigrant, with no English acknowledge upon arrival. She struggles in school and indeed needs help for homework from a bilingual tutor. When I heard about her circumstances, I nodded my head immediately and deliberately accepted this “job”.
Since I was a new foreign immigrant once, I knew overcoming a language barrier is such a tough challenge. As the power of kindness is stronger than barrier, I am given to reach out and help her anxiously. As soon as I joined the Big Brother Big Sister program, I seek change the lives of children facing adversity for the better in communities. Throughout my two years of high school, I have one-to-one tutored Emelia. I believe a tiny selfless act in the community can make a big difference. I have confidence in my ability to impact deprived Emelia and ensure her to stay on the right path. …show more content…
Being a big sister is greatest things that I have ever do.
Not to mention, one of the most inspiring “job”. I can not only influence my little one, I also have the opportunity to help shape Emelia’s future for the better by empowering her to achieve. Walking into Dover Elementary school every Wednesday puts an immediate smile on my face, and while I am there to mentor the student, I believe that I am the one who has been taught the most because of her positive attitudes and ambition. It is an honor to receive simple notes from Emelia that range from “I love you” to “you’re the best,” and I aim to live up to that each
week.
Volunteering with the BBBS is life-altering. Emelia and I are capable of cooperating on the kinds of activities that we both loved. For example, we both enjoyed reading story books together. When she doesn’t know the definition or pronunciation of a word, I always help her in time. From heart to heart, Emelia share her thoughts with me.
Over the years of working with her, my mentor Emilia acrossed her obstacle in communication and academic. With strong emphasis on education, Emelia significantly improves from an average C grade to straight A student. Energetic Emelia always look upon on me, grin to me from ear to ear and embrace me the moment that I arrived. Embedding my trust in child like Emelia, who are sheltered, enables her to become more adaptive in society.
While Emilia becomes a well-rounded individual, became more adapt to the English language and American cultures; I became an altruistic role model, become more willing to spread the virtue of love and kindness. I may be a mere teenager, however, I have my most durable power on my side: kindness. I strive to share kindness and be the change I wish to see in the world.
