Personal Narrative-Bone Cancer
The next day at lunch was buzzing. Everyone was talking about my home run and our big win, but that wasn't the biggest thing on everyone's tongue.

That was reserved for the kiss between Blake and I.

I let out a breath of relief, knowing that Tiana still had a chance. I was about to ask about the surgery, until I noticed the doctor's facial expression was still grim and depressing.

"The bad news is, the cancer has already spread to numerous parts of her body." He faces the x-rays, pointing to the middle one, where the inside of Tiana's body is lit up with cancer. He turns to me, his frown deepening, "Tiana's cancer has already spread to 80% of her body, which cannot be cured with the surgery. Right now, we can put her in the hospital."

I couldn't believe my eyes as I stared at her x-rays. She didn't deserve this. She should be able to live her life and see and feel all of the great things in life. My heart dropped as I continued to stare at her x-rays, but I still had a sliver of hope left in me. I wouldn't let her go through what mom went

Other personal experiences include two of my siblings, both served in Iraq, who were exposed to enemy gunfire while serving. I lost my grandmother eight years ago, who was my rock in every possible way. My grandmother was diagnosed with Leukemia, which she kept from everyone in my family until two months before her death. I believe family stress developed due to her sudden death. Aside from family stress, I personally struggled with my grandmother’s death, who reflected as a woman with great strength and lots of wisdom; who also taught me values, honesty, and community. Further, five years later, in the year 2009, I lost another family member to gunshot violence, who was shot in the head and died instantly; this family member was also…

As a radiation therapist, I treat cancer and other diseases by administering radiation using a machine called a linear accelerator. It is my job to simulate, schedule, and treat patients as well as being empathic to my patient's concerns and easing any anxieties they may have. I image each patient daily using either two-dimensional or three-dimensional x-ray imaging prior to their treatment to localize the treatment volume before I administer their radiation treatment, this ensures accuracy of the treatment delivery and avoids healthy surrounding tissue. It is crucial that I accurately maintain daily treatment records and daily QA to make sure the machine is running properly. Although at times it is difficult for me to treat terminally…

It’s a very lonely place because the really difficult thing of that period is just, is the uncertainty. I remember hearing about a friend who had cancer in 2012 and that was devastating, but for it to happen to me – it, it was a lot, you know. I felt like I was in a completely sort of separate place from everyone else. And, though my family and friends were, you know very caring, very understanding, you can’t…
