When our turn to order came up I provided a concise order in an effort to diffuse her emotional reaction to the gentleman that ordered just before me. She looked up at my nervously and started repeating my order to make sure it had been taken down correctly. I spoke up loud so she could hear and told him that I was very impressed with her professionalism. I explained how she cared for my order, ensuring every last detail was as I had ordered all the while being very welcoming. I turned my attention to the young girl and I told her that she was doing a great job and would very successful if she continued to care for people with such care. She thanked me.
After my family was done with our meal. I cleaned off the tables and we walked to the door. As we were exiting I hear someone calling "ma'am... ma'am" but being as young as I am I rarely turn around to that salutation. She voice gets louder and so I turn around to find the young girl standing in front of me, her hands clasped tightly together. She explained that this was her first job, and she was having a very rough day. She thanked me for my feedback, and explained that it had meant a lot to her.
As my family piled into our car my kids seemed embarrassed, as they teased me about my need to praise a stranger. This was a great opportunity to teach my children a lesson about loving on people with everything, just as Jesus had.
