Personal Narrative: Dehumanization
I always knew this notion existed. I always tried to ignore it. Whenever someone in my social circle made an intolerant remark, I would force myself to calm down reaffirming myself that it’s their ignorance talking, that they are just being immature or that they do not understand how pernicious their statements are. Those brief aggressions, that resentful mindset, I came to a point in which I couldn’t take it anymore. I could not just dismiss it again. At some point, I realized I was sick and tired of the materialistic views some of the people in my social environment had. It ranged from dismissing people who did not manage to amass great wealth as lazy to dehumanizing workers.
I may be quite young, but I have always been exposed to this sort of bigotry and

A couple of months ago my friend Valerie asked me to help her on this project to bring Models of United Nations to kids on the slums. I was a little bit skeptical at first. I thought it was risky and it might not have great impact in them as these children often drop out of school and get involved in gangs or start working to sustain their children and spouses. Valerie insisted and I gave it a try. That day changed my life. I thought I was going to be received by a rather hostile crowd, yet, my audience was warm and welcoming. I thought I would be facing disinterest, but I saw a group of curious, engaged youths. These were the kids of the working class. Some of the girls were pregnant, yet they were determined to keep up on their studies. Some others were seniors and the first ones to ever graduate in their families. In them, I saw a hopeful, working youth that wanted to move forward in life and after meeting them I felt compelled to speak out against the materialistic views that dehumanized them. After seeing these youths face to face and listening to their struggles I realized I could not keep quiet. Soon after I met these teenagers someone in a family reunion started insinuating that

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

Intolerance is not a new idea as can be seen in the play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, which takes place in 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials. The Puritans specialized in narrow-minded beliefs as anyone who did not conform to their ideals was not tolerated in their society. Without their ignorance, it would have been much harder for the Witch Trials to occur if they did at all. It may seem like dangerous intolerance is an ancient concept, but discrimination lives on in today’s society. Recently, a 14 year old Muslim boy, who was an avid engineering student, was believed to have brought a bomb to school, however it was a clock he had made at home. It is blatant that the teacher took part in racial profiling and believed the young boy…

Parrillo states that in the socialization process, people learn the “values, attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of their culture or subculture.” Children, being easily swayed because they’re taught to obey their parents, often take on the beliefs and ideas of their parents without inquiring about these principles. The beliefs of a child’s parents also become the child’s beliefs. Many viewpoints that people learn from their parents and from others in society may be stereotypes. However, many people don’t recognize this, since people are so accustomed to hearing these stereotypes. One example that Parrillo gives is of the Jim Crow laws of the 1890’s and the early 20th century. The people who grew up with Jim Crow laws accepted them as normal, though they weren’t.…

It was grand Final day at the Wimborne sports ground my stomach was churning inside of me. I Stumbled to my hands and began to throw up in one of the shrubs in the car park. I was interrupted by dads laughing “You sissy stop begin a girl and get with your team we’ve got a grand final to win!” I replied back “Well actually dad if you remember, the only reason our team made it to the grand final was because of me” my dad just laughed and said “Sure, sure whatever you believe Aden”. The only reason dad named me Aden was because my dad believed that one day I would hopefully grow up as some tough rugby league super star like Greg Inglis or Sam Thaiday. But no I am nothing more than a sticker figure, with shorter hair and gleaming blue eyes. Every…

At times I feel as though I'm trying and failing to be a human being. But what makes us human? I feel although I'm a human-shaped shell made out of pieces of things I find interesting. Instead of a real identity. Just layers of things that I hope will make me different from others. But am I? We rely so much on the opinion of others. But why? Why do we crave acceptance of others? If people were to look closely, they'd notice there really isn't anything there.Just a mess of a person trying to find their ‘place in the world. All we want is to be remembered. Just to prove we are something , we where something. How will I be remembered? Or will I fade into oblivion? Is this the meaning of life? To spend it hoping we have some significance in this…

I am the eldest of three to a school teacher and professional musician turned deli clerk. I grew up on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Like most of my classmates, I qualified for free or reduced lunch. It is difficult for families to find any house to rent year-round, never mind a safe one. I remember in one house we weren’t allowed to jump, or run for fear the floor collapsing. I had classmates who didn’t have enough to eat; one of my best friends in middle school was a foster child whose mother struggled with addiction. I was among the few who, though poor, was well cared for and loved by my happily married parents. I believe that in a “civilized” society no one should have to struggle for the most basic necessities. At first, I was not…

When I was much younger, I had the opportunity to live in rural Georgia. While living there I had the assumption, since I had medical insurance everyone else does too. During this time I made some friends of which I had learned their family did not have health insurance. This raised my awareness of various topics. The first was not everyone is the same and not everyone has what you have. Looking back after reading and the live classroom, I realize having health insurance was a privilege, and in my case could be considered an unearned privilege. This is due to the fact my health insurance, which was earned by my father who was serving in the US Air Force, was given to me because I was his dependent. Listening to the live classroom, I came across some similarities as my classmates.…

As a child, I always felt sick inside and so ugly on the outside whenever my oldest sister’s Wendy friends came over to our house. I was always the topic of conversation or the joke for the day. Instead of having fun like the other kids, I would sit in my room until her company left. I believed that if they did not see me they could not talk about me. Sometimes, I felt like God brought me into this world just so people would have someone to hate.…

These are usually formed by stereotypes that aren’t true. Many are used in the world today. The public and the media are the ones who cause them to form. People believe things because they think that it came from a reliable source. The public may think if someone important says it it must be true. Not everything that comes out of someone's mouth is true. Get to know who you are dealing with before you actually judge someone or a group. Don’t believe everything you hear or the thing you see on tv. Everything is not as it may seem and not every word someone says is…
