Personal Narrative: Drinking Too Much
While vacationing with my family on our annual trip I found myself overindulging in my vices. I ate too much, smoked too much and drank more than I would care to admit. After clumsily changing into my nightclothes I had to endure one of my mother’s famous speeches. “Tomorrow you are waking up early chiquitita, and I better not hear you complain!” I groaned and tucked myself into the fluffy down comforter next to my sister, the best part about drinking too much is the blissful and instantaneous sleep that follows. The down side of drinking too much is that urgent need to pee at inconvenient moments. Mine was at three in the morning; I stumbled out of bed and rushed to the bathroom with about as much grace as a sack of potatoes. Great! I was having a sleep paralysis episode. Normally I would get one or maybe two a month but it had been so long since I had one that I was not prepared at all. I accepted it and allowed my brain to drift off to sleep again when I heard the one thing that I hated to hear during one of my episodes. It was faint at first, hidden behind my dad’s monstrous snoring. But it got louder and louder as seconds past, it was the sound of

Sleep paralysis is something only a few people experience in their lifetime. I have never experienced it myself but from doing the research on it is hard to believe someone goes through it and multiple times. Many people see things we only hear about and during the sleep paralysis it can seem more real and frightening than a regular dream. Before I was saved, I lived a very unhealthy lifestyle. Being the youngest in my family, I was constantly spoiled and protected. This led me to become a very prideful and ignorant child. I thought the world was great, my life was great, and I was great. Now I am not saying any of those things are not true, but my views changed quite a bit once I hit middle school. My sister had moved onto college at this point and I was alone to tackle middle school. I discovered a lot during those years but my biggest discovery was probably about my family. I learned that they weren’t the perfect figures I thought they were. My parents fought constantly and that left me devastated. On top of being spoiled and arrogant, I was also depressed.…

Life is full of risks. And not all risks are predictable. The first and the biggest crisis in my life happened a few days after the fifteenth birthday. I was diagnosed with a kind of cancer and took a year off from middle school to have chemotherapy after surgery. Fortunately, I was on the mend after hospitalizing for the first three months, so I received the outpatient treatment after that. Now it was time to go back to school. However, I had a lot of different thoughts running through my mind. I no longer wanted to take my life for granted. Instead, I wanted to be stronger and challenge myself. So I decided to go on to high school in the abroad. I persuaded my parents for six months and they finally agreed to let me move to New York! It was…

I had been drinking everyday for about a year when my father and I began talking about my problem. I knew I had a problem, but I wouldn't acknowledge it publicly. My father one day in a conversation we were having, mentioned a poem I wrote about drinking. One line in particular at the end "a real friend won't disappear when your thirsty" gave almost definite proof of my knowing I had a problem. At the end of that discussion, we decided to check me into a rehabilitation program in Falmouth called Gosnold.…

A few feet away, a robed figure sat on my chair and slowly moved towards me. As it got closer, a menacing skull appeared. The only thing I could move were my eyeballs” (Ting Diu, 2015, p.1). Sleep paralysis is a real thing. It won’t kill you, but the risk factors that are involved gives you an increased chance of death. People of all ages experience this disorder. Familiarities include being choked and raised in the air. Hundreds of years later reports are constantly being filed over the syndrome. It is a very scary thing but remember you are not the only one. When you wake in the dead of night unable to move any muscle in your body or even scream, just focus on your breathing. Try to move a small muscle in your body to break free from the strange phenomenon. “The truth is, sleep paralysis is a biological event and there is nothing to be worried about. You’re not dying. It’s a hiccup in the brain’s chemical soup as we transition from sleep to wakefulness” (Ryan Hurd, 2016,…
