I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

I never thought me, of all people, would experience such a sorrowful day. I have tried to forget it time and time again; but the reality is I will always remember every miniscule detail, moment, word, and facial expression on that particular day. My heart managed to shatter into a million pieces, leaving me without a reason to pursue my existence. My salty tears freely rolled down my warm cheeks, causing my eyes to burn sensationally. I remember mourning on the comforting shoulders of my family members, as they too were consumed by their feelings. The most valuable lesson that beared a reservation in my spirit was to cherish every moment and loved one, for tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. I wish I could have fathom this reality before the climactic tragedy struck me like a ton of bricks. Although death is normal, it seemed almost foreign when it abducted the life of my favorite uncle.…

All of the setbacks and all the ups and downs show to everyone that you can never give up even when it seems that everything is bad in life. My grandma fighting for that many months not being able to talk or remember really shows how strong and loving of a person she was. This is when I decided that I need to push through life even when you're going through a rough time. She is the reason I have motivation to do anything because I know to this day that she would keep fighting and fighting if she was still here. It has also giving me a positive outlook on life and that anything is possible even if life seems like it can’t get any…

It was the summer of 2007, the day after the fourth of july. Fireworks were still going off. The atmosphere was light, filled with laughter and smiles. Nobody had noticed my cousin’s body drop to the pavement but me.I was staring at the group of masked people when it all happened. I vividly remember them approaching him whilst pointing a gun to his head. After tugging onto my mother’s pink silk shirt and pointing towards my cousin, it was chaotic. Everyone had ran towards him except for my aunt. My aunt’s feet were glued to the pavement and her mouth stood agape. A tear ran down her cheek and she then collapsed. A couple days after my cousin’s neurosurgery, my aunt remained the same. During his recovery she never really spoke unless she needed…

Writing this eulogy allowed me to tap into memories way in the past. Whenever we would come down to visit from Pennsylvania grandma would grasp my wrist and pester me about not speaking creole. I would shrug as not quite sure what to say. Eventually she would let go and this became routine whenever I saw her when I was younger. Also, I was around seven-years-old when grandma came to visit us. On the ride home we began to slap one another on the arm. It was strange but in a good way.…

5:45 a.m., Wednesday, Boxing Day, 2013. I was sleeping soundly in my bed when the phone rang. I could hear the sound of someone getting up to pick up the phone. Shortly afterwards, I could hear the sound of weeping. I heard my Mom tell my Dad that Oma had passed away. Two days ago we had received word that she had fallen on her back and suffered a concussion. The fall might have been caused by her struggle with Alzheimer’s.…

When I was doing homework one Saturday night, my mom gave me the news that my friends have invited me to watch a movie. I said yes, since I was doing homework for a couple of hours. The movie that we saw was about a car crash and how it changed one girl’s life. That girl lost her little brother in the accident. She was fighting with her brother, as I was, and when he passed away, she realized he was a big part of her life. I started crying.…

One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

I realized that a lot of families and individuals have experienced even more and unfortunate deaths toward family members, friends, and just loved ones in general. For me writing this essay put me in that same emotional state of mind that I had experienced when both my grandmother and babysitter had passed. That is why today I hold a strong and loving relationship with my family and friends, because when the time comes God is calling one of them home, and that you know, they know, and God knows that you both had a fun ride without any…

Starting off with the end of eighth grade year is when I realized how much my life would change after one decision. My small group of friends consisted of them being in band. I’ve always been a shy person when it comes to meeting new people which is why I never tried out. I remember seeing posters announcing to come try out for color guard which is a performing arts program during marching season in high school. I had a couple of friends who were convincing me to join since that would mean we would all be in band. My best decision was going to try out and making the team.…

A year ago today, I was a broken lifeless spirit with no hope of going anywhere, now I’m planning on saving others from the cold and jet-black place I was in. I didn’t have a good high-school life up until the middle of last year. I’ve been through a very deep pit of depression. I’ve been through intense bullying, and been put down more than once. I’ve experienced so many bitter trials and tribulations, but I write to you today with a smile on my face. Partially because of my relationship with my grandmother I got better. She brought me up on all the good morals she could offer, and has tried to provide me with the best life that she can. Although, there have been some major bumps along the way. I got appendicitis and when my appendix ruptured,…

I was about eleven or twelve at the time. My mother called me into her bedroom. “Khalil, I have breast cancer,” she said. Bewildered, confused and emotionally wounded when she proclaimed that she might not be a part of my life anymore. The announcement of her terminal illness shocked and awed me to a point in which I could not wipe the tears from my face fast enough to see properly. However, this experience not only made me appreciate and value my mother’s existence more, but, it also made me look back at my grandmother’s value, whom was diagnosed with this plague as well. After my mother bared this horrible news, I could not look her in face without breaking down in tears. Without thinking, I quickly dashed towards my room to let my pillows absorb my unrelenting screams. As I calmed the raging storm spiraling in my mind, I soon returned to my mother’s room. When I returned I noticed her expression had not changed at all. As she continued to smile as if nothing went wrong in the world, I could not comprehend how she continued to stay calm and collected in this situation. In addition to being at fault, I…
