Personal Narrative: Finding Adequate Childcare
Finding Adequate Child Care
Finding adequate and affordable childcare is critical for your success. This represents a major challenge for many moms. I already talked about this, but just want to reiterate how important this is to your success. I was lucky to find family daycare centers that were flexible and willing to accommodate my changing needs. I couldn't have succeeded without them.
I cannot overstate the importance of having reliable childcare. It can mean the difference between completing your degree and dropping out of college.
Look for colleges that offer on-campus childcare. They may be cheaper and more flexible. If you can swap child care duties with other moms, that can be a great arrangement too. If you live close to family and

I shared a home with another single mom in my final year of college. I was on a tight budget and could only afford $550 a month for rent.
That amount included bills which wasn’t too bad. I admit it wasn’t a very pleasant experience. My roommate had a teenage son and they were really loud! For some weird reason they liked cooking at night. Imagine trying to get two young kids to bed at 8.30pm in a very noisy apartment. Not an easy feat to accomplish.
The mom and her son had this very irritating habit of leaving dirty dishes in the sink. I really tried to ignore the inconvenience. I had to constantly remind myself that it was a temporary situation. However, when the son started to steal the children’s food and snacks, I decided to have a talk with him. Sadly, he didn’t listen to me and carried on with his thieving ways. Eventually, I had to tell his mom what was going on, and that made things a bit awkward for a while. O well!
I shared that story so you can be prepared in the event you need to share a home -- especially with strangers. If you can stay with your parents while attending college that should be a big help, since it would allow you to focus on getting a degree in the fastest time

There are three different options available for childcare; in-home childcare, day care centers and babysitters. With in-home child care, you hire a nanny to look after your children at home. For most families this is the easiest option for them however it is the most expensive. A day care center is an actual place parents bring their children to and it allows them to interact with other children and learn social skills. A downside to daycare centers is the risk of your child facing fights with other children. The final option listed involves hiring a babysitter. Babysitters are usually rotated and paid only when they watch the children opposed to a regular flow of income. You must be very careful when choosing a baby sitter, and be sure to run background checks. I personally believe that day care centers will be the most beneficial for me when I decide to start a family.…
