When people see me, they probably see a girl with glasses and pretty big dimple. I believe I am more than that. When I look in the mirror. I see a strong girl that fights for what she wants. Who also, sometimes wants to just quit but knows that there will be success at the end of the road waiting for her. The outside can blind people; you can’t really see what’s in the inside. I have to dig to find my culture identity. My main segments of my cultural identity are language, family and my education. My identity reflects of a young African American female, who has grew up in Decatur,

I am Ethiopian. Being Ethiopian has taught me to love the people around me, respect everything I have and also become the level header person I am today. My culture has built the backbone of our family and has kept us together through all odds. My mother and father keep the culture alive by speaking the official language of Amharic in the house, cooking traditional food and also practicing our Orthodox religion. Perhaps one of the most profound things about people, especially the millennial generation, is the incredible acceptance and adaptations found in the face of situation in which we encounter people who are different from ourselves. The ability to mesh with the people around me, and to be a part of a community comes easily to me. I have grown up in a one-of-a kind little town in the mountains of Colorado, and have always been surrounded by people who are both leaps and bounds away from me in our differences, and people I found plenty of things in common with. It is an expanded version of this diversity that I crave in my upcoming college experience. To be able to meet and interact with students from all different walks of life is a major priority as I move into the next chapter of my life.…

I am a first-generation immigrant, who have struggled with cultural identity because I grew up with two different cultural values. My childhood consisted of seeing people who look like me and who identified with the same cultural ideas; however, after moving to southern California, I witnessed a diverse population with different cultures. My cultural influences come from my parents and peers and the media, so I feel conflicted between the traditional and conservative culture of my parents and the liberal and open-minded values of my peers.…

In March of 2007, I entered the United States illegally. Prior to this, I had been deported twice. Crossing the border was very dangerous, but I had to do it because in Mexico we are very poor. My father passed away 21 years ago, and my mom was left a widow with 11 children. My oldest brother moved out of the house, so I had to step up and help my mom raise my siblings. Where I’m from, there aren’t many jobs available, only on the fields and the pay wasn’t enough to support us. I didn’t want to cross the border, but I had no other choice. I ask for your forgiveness for breaking the immigration law by crossing the border and living in America illegally.…

I belong to a community that praises hard work and intellect, always striving to earn a better life. This community is the first generation immigrant community. Since I am the oldest sibling, I am designated in the unique role in my family as a cultural advisor to American life, an overachieving role model to my younger brother, and the face of my parents’ source of pride. I view my situation not as an impediment, but as a catalyst for my business and public service aspirations in the future. Education has always been stressed even when I was in elementary school. I would spend all evening working on supplementary reading problems and critical thinking math problems, assuming that this was what my American peers did when they got home. I have…

Identity is who a person is. It determines how you act and how people think of you. For example, a person whose identity is bad is often bound for trouble and for others to look down on them, whereas a person with a good identity is often bound for success and treated well by others. A person’s identity can be affected by many things: where he/she was born, the person’s parents, friends and other things. Through my life experiences I have become creative, spirited, and inquisitive.…

Samuel, I really enjoyed your post as I like hearing about other people’s family history since mine is so diverse. With your skin tone, eyes, and hair I can see why someone may say you look Hispanic. At least you take it in stride. Today, too many people get offended when someone calls them the wrong race or ethnic origin. It is really good that you continue your family’s tradition of cooking Greek and Italian dishes and I hope your children continue that. My family has been in this country so long and has so many nationalities in the mix that we have Southern traditions instead of a specific country. I do enjoy researching my family’s history. I do not have anyone famous in my family so far, but my great-great grandfather, Private John Henry Gwathney, did manage to survive the Civil War while serving under General Nathan Bedford Forrest.…

Prior to taking this course, I thought I knew what it meant to be versatile in various cultures. However, in reality, I really did not know as much as I thought I did. Last semester, I took part of the study abroad program to Costa Rica. I embarked on a cultural journey that forever changed my life. I was able to experience and embrace in a new and different culture than my own. I lived in Costa Rica for four months. While living there, I had opportunity to also travel to two other countries in Central America, Nicaragua and Panama. After living in another country for four months, I believed that I was culturally diverse; I believed that I knew what it was like to being cultural, little did I know that there was so much more than to living…

It came from your ancestors from many generations ago, and it comes from your family and community today.” (Axner) Culture does play a big part in life as well as problems within the lifetime.…
