Good Afternoon Pr Patton,

Upon our arrival at 8 AM, we met with Monique Lisa Dominguez who showed us around, and provided us with an office where we could leave our belongings. After setting up, my partner David and I approached the few people who were already in the room. We had the opportunity to educate parents ( both male and female) and pregnant women on the differences between the cold and the flu as well as on the importance of getting the flu shot. We stayed there until 11:15 AM , and we are planning on to being there around the same time for the remaining of the quarter. The only issue we encountered was the fact that many of the people there were Spanish speakers. David was able to manage most of the conversations, but he was not

The gunpowder smoke coagulating in her lungs, hearing the cries for help, and not knowing if she’ll ever see her 2 year old son again. I was the lead Spanish/English interpreter for two years at the UCSD Student-Run Free clinic. This was a fulfilling experience where I was able to shadow medical students and physicians, learn more about underserved populations, practice my medical Spanish and learn more about the health system in general. I believe that during my time at the UCSD Free clinic I made a difference by creating a relationship with the patients. I got the learn more about many of the clinic’s patients, creating a bond that allowed them to trust while talking about their problems and health needs. By having this trusting relationship with patients, I was able to communicate better with the other members of the clinic and as a team create a better plan for participant’s…

My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the…

Even before this assignment was introduced, I was fully aware that this class was to be mainly focused on community health promotions and the importance of it. I was aware that we were going to learn about the fundamentals of health promotion and how it was done in different parts of the world. But what I wasn’t aware of was that the entire class was to partake in promoting good health in our own community via the Health Fair! When the assignment was first introduced, my initial thinking was that working in groups was something I personally never really favored in the past. Then there was the actual interaction with the community, specifically those who are at the flea market. I have been to the flea market before and I was particularly worried about the language barrier since most of those who go to the flea market were Spanish speakers; let alone none of our team members had any Spanish background other than basic high school training. Not only this, but the whole idea of promoting good health to a community with only over a month’s worth of preparation and learning health promotions from scratch was all a bit too overwhelming for me. Normally, this would have been the kind of class I would have dropped right away. I’m glad I didn’t because the Health Fair was definitely an experience I would never forget.…

The Emergency Department can sometimes be a gruesome or solemn. The RN on call cared for all of her patient’s like family. It was amazing to see how fast she recognized different cultures throughout the day. I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to help translate with some Spanish speaking patients. This reminded me how important it was to know more than one language in the medical field. The patient was finally able to express herself to get the help that she needed.…
