Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Military Family
Growing up, I was always a daddy’s girl. Then, I began to transition to relying on my mother more than father when I started to notice my dad’s absents. Due to away from home military work, my dad missed many milestones in my life like my first leading role play, the first time a rode a bike, and my middle school graduation. Eventually, I realized that my dad was sacrificing his time with his family and risking his life helping make a bigger difference in the world. I learned from the stress, prayers, and fear for my dad that I have to cherish every moment with the people I love. I view my dad as the definition of resilience. I cannot try to explain what my dad went through during his time overseas but he returned to his same ole’ happy, goofy self. My dad taught me that I need to be an independent woman and never to depend on anyone for my success. I will make my dad proud by becoming that educated, independent women, he hopes me to be. Being a part of a military family, I have learned that our military personnel’s bravery and strength remains underappreciated within American society. The highest paid athlete Floyd Mayweather net worth reigns in about $430 million. Even the lowest paid professional athletes in the US make about $500,000. While, a larger number of military veterans remain homeless due to persisting PTSD, substance abuse, lack of support, and extremely low income. Recently, an active duty Solider, who served two tours in Afghanistan, experience at a popular fast-food establishment surprising buzzed Facebook. After the servicemen asked if the restaurant offered a military discount, a woman violently approached the servicemen arguing that all military personnel believe they are entitled. This underappreciation of our military continues to grow as the honorable action of our soldiers receives lessening media

On January 30, Ryan Park, a Navy veteran, walked into a Jollibee fast food location in Union County, California. Upon inquiring about a military discount, no different than many seniors do at movie theaters across the country, a woman proceeded to interrupt his conversation with the server exclaiming, “That is so rude!” She continued to question why military veterans think they are entitled to special privileges. Ryan responded, “I gave up my privileges so that people like you can have them.” The woman is so appalled by the veteran’s “entitlement” that she feels she must leave the store. She is completely oblivious to what the man has sacrificed for her, and she is clearly disconnected from this side of our world. For a veteran to be ridiculed and subjected to harassment by the public his sacrifices protected, dampens his feelings of heroism that have been rightfully earned. Similar disconnect…

Somewhere in the Middle East there is a mom fighting in a foreign war. The gunpowder smoke coagulating in her lungs, hearing the cries for help, and not knowing if she’ll ever see her 2 year old son again. Soldiers everywhere do this every day not knowing if they are going home ever to see their loved ones. They do this because they are selfless and are heroes. That’s why an American I believe in is made possible by the sacrifices of our military.…

Despite non-selection, my pursuit of this prestigious and challenging position will not be deterred. My naval career, I have continually sought positions of greater responsibility and produced exceptional results in each of those positions. While I take great pride in being a Chief Petty Officer, I feel the experience I have acquired as a Chief will benefit any wardroom I am a member of. It is important to note that I did not submit an LDO-CWO package for FY-14 due to the time constraints I experienced while standing up Naval Beach Unit SEVEN with an under staffed office and operational commitment.…

As a child, my parents tried to shield me as much as they could. Like every sound parent, mine wanted me to maintain a young and innocent mindset for as long as possible. However, when it would come time for my dad to be deployed time and time again, my mother and father had no choice but to explain why he was leaving. Knowing my father willingly would leave his family behind to defend our freedom made me recognize there must be bad in the world. I realized the dangers my father faced every time he left home wearing his uniform. Moreover, I truly realized that by him putting himself in harms way, my mom, sister, and myself did not have to fear danger invading our homeland. My father’s participation in the Air Force registered in me the concept of freedom and how privileged us as Americans truly are. I developed a strong sense of pride and love in my country and the men and women who serve and defend it.…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

I was born in Iraq in a domestic violent environment. In my second grade in elementary, I and my sister moved to 7 different foster child housing. I had to move to 7 different elementary schools in one year. I was being sexually molested several times by these foster families and emotionally and physically as well. My parents finally were able to get back together and keep us somehow stable till the middle school. Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

The route I have taken after high school has definitely been the path less traveled. I enlisted into the United States Marine Corps after graduating high school to serve the country that welcomed me in with open arms as a refugee, and blessed me so much with freedoms and opportunities that I would have never obtained in Tibet or India. During my years in the Corps, I received the opportunity to travel the World, lead Marines, and make a difference. The Marine Corps has definitely been a steppingstone because it has rewarded me with a broader perspective of the World, military discipline and bearing, and many other intangible traits I plan to instill throughout my life. Also during my service, I gained very unconventional experiences that were…

What does it take to be a military brat? Military brats are people with parents in any military branch that have to deal with constant moving from base to base and long restless nights worrying if they will ever get to see their loved ones again. The most important thing that it takes to be a military brat is that no matter how crazy their life can get, they are proud of who they are. It is often hard to make friends, because they tend to move a lot and are not in one place for a very long time. People have created conventions, social media networks, and registries where military brats can get together and meet other people that live a life that is similar to their own. For example, militarybrats.net is a social network where military brats can meet other military brats and talk about their similar life experiences. There is also a Military Brats registry that was created by a man named Marc Curtis. He originally created it to get in contact with his old military friends in Fort Bliss, but then he had the idea to open it up to anyone who wants to find other military people that they can relate too (Curtis). The social site is also free…
