Personal Narrative: H. Jackson Brown Jr.
H. Jackson Brown Jr. once said, “When you can’t change the direction of the wind, just adjust your sails.” I can relate to this quote in regards to overcoming problems in my early teenage years. I grew up with my mother, father, and two older sisters. My sisters are a few years older than I am. Growing up with two older sisters was a struggle but it was especially challenging because they had a gift for athletics and I did not. Both of my sisters were naturals when it came to sports. One of them was the most elite gymnast in Maine consecutively for five years until she graduated. My other sister was a three-time state champion in the pole vault. My parents were both athletes and my two sisters were everything they could ever dream of, but then there was me. I loved baseball, but was not proficient in any position. I couldn’t hit, catch, or throw no matter how much I practiced. I realized this when I sat on the sidelines and watched my team play game after game. It was frustrating to know that I was not skilled enough to play, and because of that I gave up sports for good. At that moment, I felt like I did not fit in with my family. We had nothing in common because sports …show more content…
I bought a drum set and watched YouTube videos to teach myself how to play. I joined the concert band in fifth grade and continued to take it as a class until sophomore year in high school. I also played in the jazz band for four years, the pep band for five years, and the show choir for two. The feeling I got in my stomach when I was up to bat in a baseball game was the same butterflies that I got when I played music with a group. The difference between baseball and playing the drums was that my hard work did not go unnoticed. Music is a universal language that brings people together, and nobody sits on the bench. Music was a healthy alternative for me because it taught me that everyone should be accepted and

Who would put their son’s desecrated body on display for all public to see? Mamie Till would. Her son, fourteen year-old Emmett Till, was visiting his relatives in Mississippi where he was kidnapped, murdered, and ditched in the Tallahatchie River by two white men for wolf-whistling at a white woman. These men were tried and found not guilty. Till’s mother, Mamie, fought back with one intention; to bring justice on her son’s death which would later be etched in the American Civil Rights History.…

My grandfather William Seward Jackson (1879-1958) was a jack of all trades and I stayed in the sun many a day fetching and carrying for him. He taught me the name of all of the tools. He even had a special name for me, "monkey." William Seward Jackson a hardworking man who according to his granddaughter was very accomplished. Granddad was a well sought-after carpenter, a leather craftsman who made saddles, shoes, belts, aprons, and anything that had to do with leather. He also was a sharpshooter and taught the men of Fayette how to shoot, including the KKK who came to kill him against the sheriff's advice, after he tore up Mr. McNabb’s grocery store, when his mother was insulted in the store by Mr. McNabb.…

As I walk in through the swinging glass door of my grandparents house, the instant smell of fresh white baked bread hits me. The sweet dough crisped to golden-brown is now in sight. I see it sitting there, on the smooth kitchen table to the left of where I just entered. I know that as soon as I say hello a piece of it will be offered to me. As I continue straight into the open living room I notice my gray-haired grandpa sitting comfortably in his cushioned lazy boy rocker. With every slow rock he makes there is a slight creak that overpowers the sound of the Twins game on their T.V. On the crest of the same rocker lies his favorite dog, Lucy. Her white and black, furry belly expands and compresses at the same rate of the slow rock. My grandma,…

My sister played Cross Country, Basketball, Track, and Softball. Being in the Piña family meant two things: doing well in school and playing multiple sports. Although it wasn’t easy at first, it was a part of my high school experience which also gave me great friends. Before entering my freshman year I did summer workouts with the cross country team that would become the State Champion cross country team later that year. After we won my freshman year, I knew that I wanted to be a part of a team that could succeed. So I worked hard and eventually became on the State Team my junior year. I also worked hard in Soccer, Baseball, and…

I only had school every Monday and Tuesday because my mom was so busy and needed to work. When she came home from work she was so tired she would fall asleep. I would worry about not learning stuff but my mom would always tell me that the only thing i needed to learn was street smarts, which is all I need for living in Chicago. The only thing that kept me human was baseball when my dad left, it was there for me when I was sad, I would walk four miles every day just so I could go to batting practice. My mom is wonderful and takes me to every baseball game even though we don’t have much money, we always save up so I can play in the best division possible. I had people come up to me and tell me I could be the next big thing in baseball, but I do it for my mom, she helps me with everything from batting to pitching and she is the best coach you could ask for. My mom gives me strength to not quit and she makes me believe I can do anything. Today is the day, tryouts are always tough but I was gonna try my best and that is all I could do. The first drill was batting we had to hit into the left, right and middle over the fence that was 300 feet away. The first up batting was Jeremy he didn't get it over on any of them, the next guy John didn't get any either. One by one none of them got it over. I heard them call my name, “Zach Lingard, you are up next after Ron Harper”. Ron is the best guy I have ever seen at baseball at my age, and he only got it over one part of the fence, the left side of the fence. The coach called my name, it was my turn. I was terrified, not one of them got it over except for Ron and he only got one over the fence, here goes nothing, the first one on the left side the coach throws me a fast slider down low and I crush it right over the fence, my…

“Wow! I did not know there were black Americans”. During the month I was in China, I heard this or a variant of it jokily said to me numerous times. I never took offense to it since I understood most of the media from America that came to China featured individuals who did not look like me. Furthermore, for those Americans who had come to China, they were mostly white and had come for business. While in China, I was able to share my experience as an African-American; I always found enjoyment sharing my experiences and it seemed to me those around me found enjoyment learning about a different side of America. With me sharing my experiences, they were being able to understand the diverse nature of the United States.…

Walking into the band room for the first time, the sound of every instrument being poorly played by fourth graders suffocated the room. The squeal of saxophones and blaring bass of tubas made it impossible to hear the instructions being given by the band director. However, none of that mattered to me. All I could do was to stare at the only thing in the room that was able to grasp my attention: a shiny, red drum set. I migrated to the back corner of the room where it sat unoccupied, took my place on the stool, picked up some sticks, and immediately felt at home. At that moment, it was clear to me that playing music was what I was meant to do.…

I started first on the bass drum, with me being on of the smallest members, I looked pretty comical. Although, I didn’t care, I was only gracious to be a part of such an amazing and talented group of individuals. Choir and singing then became a big aspect of my life and educational career as well; meeting new friends and peers along the way was one of my most cherished memories. I first started singing in middle school, and then continued into my high school years as well. I can honestly say that by joining band and choir, it has connected me with life long friends and has given me many forever cherished memories. They have both pushed me in ways that I couldn’t have pushed myself, taught me many valuable life lessons, gave me the gifts of perseverance and concentration, and have shaped me into the able woman I am today. Over the years I’ve taught others to love music just as much as I do by working with middle and elementary school children. I have also taught at the preschool program located in my high school, desiring to teach them how to push past the obstacles they can not prevent and redirecting their feelings into positivity and valuable…

I come from a family with a rich background in music. I don’t know a single family member that can’t play at least one instrument or doesn’t know how to read a piece of sheet music. When I was very young my mother would play music for me and sing to me. My father would also play the drums very loudly so the entire neighborhood could hear. Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. When I was in elementary school I decided to join the choir. This was a big moment for me because music was what made me want to get up and live my life, it was always something to look forward to.…

    Musical Education

Musical education is an essential skill that should be recognized as a general education competency rather than a free elective. However, because music has become common to our culture, most educators believe musical education is unnecessary coursework. Throughout music history, band participation in band class has always been associated with smart, musically inclined students. I believe band could become more than that. Through my research, I have found links that associate band participation with very positive essential skills other than the ability to play an instrument. Band participation has been linked to create a positive learning environment in which students can gain self-esteem and motivation to better themselves at academics.…

Through the years, my family has taught me how to be a young lady and govern myself in a respectable manner. One of my mom’s most common sayings is “Make sure the decisions you make in life don’t affect the privileges you obtain.” This saying helps me to evaluate a situation, to its entirety, before reacting. My sister is the best role model anyone could ever have; she is well organized, Bible-based, and intelligent. Although my family has been through hard times we have always been there for one another, which has taught me to consistently lend a helping hand to those who are down.…
