Personal Narrative: Hawaii Surfing
Twin Surfing
I woke up to a usual day on the island of O’ahu. The sun was shining and as I looked out of my window, the waves looked perfect, cresting at the perfect height. I knew today was going to be a great day for surfing and suddenly remembered that this was the biggest day of my life, the annual Hawaii surf competition. I jumped out of bed, punched my twin brother Sam in the stomach to wake him up, and sprinted downstairs, grabbing a bowl of cereal, and then ran out of the door grabbing my board as I went. As I left I heard the old surf radio saying.
" “It’s going to be a (crackle, crackle)... day out there!”
" Somewhere in the back of my mind I felt a twinge of unease, but I just ran down to the beach and went for a morning ride.

Sweating and fidgeting became almost natural parts of the last hour of school. Finally the time had come, the bell rang and everyone in my last class (History) jumped up yelling and joking around, but I just sat in my chair looking down at my feet that were quivering in fear. When I hadn’t come out of my classroom for 20 minutes after class, Sam came in to get me.
" “What’s wrong Jase?” he said with actual concern in his eyes.
" “Are you kidding?” I replied with more venom than I should have.
" “I am scared out of my mind to surf against Ryan. You know that he is going to try to pull something like cutting me off. I could drown, you know! AND IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!” I screamed at Sam. I could see a wall break past his eyes, and he fell against that wall. He was desperately trying to figure out what to do.
" “I figured out a way to get you out of this mess,” he said trailing off at the end.
" “What!?! What!? Anything that will work?” I asked.
" “How about this; I will take your place in the face off with Ryan, then you will be fine for the competition tomorrow, even if Ryan tries to pull something.” Sam told me this with a little sigh of resignation because he knew he wouldn’t be able to beat Ryan, and he might get

" “What do you want?” he replied.
" “I just wanted to let you know that you’ve been saying my name wrong all day” I said.
" “What are you talking about?” Ryan said with a look of complete confusion.
" “You’ve been calling me Sam all day, but actually my name is Jason. Hey, it’s ok,
a lot of people confuse us”. I told him this news with delight.
" A look of bewilderment and fear swept over Ryan's face as he drifted a bit further away from me. He didn’t say a word but I knew that he was wondering how in the world he could have killed my brother and not me. As the wave came up I thought one more time, maybe my brother is still at his girlfriend’s house, but deep down I knew this could not be true. As the wave came I saw the look of determination in Ryan’s eyes. We both got up on our boards and we knew this was it, the last wave of the competition so one of us would have to win and the other lose. Ryan cut me off as usual but ,unlike the other competitors, i didn’t think twice about bailing, I immediately switched directions and cut off Ryan. I was so close to him I could hear him

If possible, try to avoid pushing each other over the edge, as that would cause me extra paperwork.” The coach opened the doors, and they all stepped outside. The Grand Canyon spread before them, live and in person. Extending over the edge was a horseshoe-shaped walkway made of glass, so you could see right through it. “Man,” Leo said. “That’s pretty wicked.” Jason had to agree. Despite his amnesia and his feeling that he didn’t belong there, he couldn’t help being impressed. The canyon was bigger and wider than you could appreciate from a picture. They were up so high that birds circled below their feet. Five hundred feet down, a river snaked along the canyon floor. Banks of storm clouds had moved overhead while they’d been inside, casting shadows like angry faces across the cliffs. As far as Jason could see in any direction, red and gray ravines cut through the desert like some crazy god had taken a knife to it. Jason got a piercing pain behind his eyes. Crazy gods ... Where had he come up with that idea? He felt like he’d gotten close to something important—something he should know about. He also got the unmistakable feeling he was in danger. “You all right?” Leo asked. “You’re not going to throw up over the side, are you? ’Cause I should ’ve brought my camera.” Jason grabbed the railing. He was shivering and sweaty, but it had nothing to do with heights. He blinked, and the pain behind his eyes subsided. “I’m fine,” he managed. “Just a headache.” Thunder…

Kook by Peter Heller, is a memoir he wrote about how he come to discover his love and passion for surfing . One of the paragraphs that give the most insight to the reader is the last paragraph of the first chapter. In this one particular chapter all the small moments that he talking about he is foreshadowing to the bigger moments that he had later on in his surfing career. While ‘reading between the lines’ the reader can see the tone and purpose that Heller is trying to portray. At the beginning of the first sentence he says “In the split second it took to attempt the most crucial move in surfing….” Here he is giving insight to what the climax of his surfing career felt like. Those split seconds that he is talking about took him not physically but mentally a took while to finally figure it out what surfing is really about—that adrenaline ‘high’ that you get after catching one of the best waves of your life! The next part talks about his transition from traveling across the country in search of an office job to finally taking control of his life. He represents that in how he is waiting for a wave but not looking for one to finally taking control of his life by “…standing [on the surfboard] and in control.” When he was up on that wave, it’s a symbol of him standing up against his old and boring ways of life. When he had caught that wave he then writes about the two thought that he had: “anything is possible” and “What the hell am I doing here”. The first thought he is referring to the moment that he had been working for his entire surfing career, when he got in the tube of the wave. The second thought that he had is referring to when he got sent to the E.R after a terrible surfing accident after…

Rainsford jumped up from the sand and ran to the water. “A ship!”, he cried. All off the men were frantically waving the ship down. It was a relief when the ship started towards the shore of the tiny island to rescue them. The ship had floated up to the island, and the angels who saved them got off and walked over to the group. As soon as the two men got off the ship Rainsford recognized his saviors as none other than Whitney and the captain. “Rainsford, is that you?” Whitney yelled over the loud waves. Rainsford and the crew ran towards the ship and Whitney gratefully. “Whitney,” Rainsford started, “I promise I’ll tell you everything, but for now I would just like to go home.” With those words the men piled onto the small boat and…
