to crash against the big truck and I screamed as loud as I could. Lucky, nothing happened to us that day, but we learned a very important lesson: do not snapchat while driving. Sadly, many people, specially high school and college students discard this important lesson. According to “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”, there are three main distractions while driving: Cognitive distraction, Visual distraction and Manual distraction. Cognitive distractions are mainly mental distractions. A good example of this is when a driver is daydreaming of a delicious, and juicy grilled steak that she or he is going to eat for dinner. Another example of mental distractions is when the driver is arguing with the passenger on whether the Broncos are better than the Raiders. A good way of avoiding mental distractions is to be mentally aware of what you are doing; no daydreaming about dinner. In addition, drivers should also remain calm and keep peace when driving.
The second main distraction while driving are Visual distractions, these kind of distraction literally take your eyes focus from the steering wheel and direct your focus elsewhere. Me and my friends are a great example of this. My friend Anna was distracted by her phone and she lost focus of the road. According to “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”, In 2015, 42% of high school students who drove in the past 30 days reported sending a text or email while driving. This statistic proves to be true because, many of my friends are always texting, browsing through Instagram and Facebook or even watching Youtube videos while driving. There are many apps that help to avoid visual distractions caused by phones. One of them is “LiveSaver”, this app uses GPS monitoring and blocks the phone while driving.
Lastly, the third main distractions while driving are manual distractions. These distractions cause the drivers to take one or even both hands off the steering wheel. My mother is a good example of this because she loves to drink coffee or do her makeup while driving. I often see people eating meals while driving and this causes them to be very slow and dangerous, since they have no control over the car. To prevent this kinds of distractions, drivers could eat before heading to their destinations.
There are many factors that can lead to car crashes and accidents, but every driver should be responsible and try to avoid Cognitive,Visual and Manual distraction to ensure everyone’s safety. Driver should be mentally aware of their driving; a hundred percent focus on the road. Drivers should also remain in a state of peace and calmness to avoid road rage. Additionally, drivers should refrain from utilizing their phones. Lastly, drivers should always ensure to have both hands on the steering wheel at all times to avoid crashes. Driving should not be frightening, and dangerous and this is why everyone needs to contribute to a have a safe rode.
