Now the momentum was completely in my teams direction. We went on a 5 to 2 point run and with 1 minute left we had our first lead of the game by 1 point. The last minute was agonizing, because we didn’t even possess the ball for one minute. The opposing team kept shooting and shooting but none of their shoots would go in the hoop. Finally, in the final second of the game Kyle Coats drives hard to the hoop and misses. I gave the ref an ear full when she called a foul and gave him two foul shoots. Of course, he makes the first free throw with ease but the second one took a lucky bounce outside hope. Meaning that the game was going to overtime. Overtime was one 5 minute period winner takes all. I honestly couldn’t believe the even had overtime in intramural basketball. We drew first blood in overtime when Mike Tangredi made an easy lay up. Towards the end opposing player John Lane hit a long 2 pointer tying the game up. With a little bit more then a minute to go my teammate Joey Morath found me again in the corner for yet another 3 pointer. Unfortunately for the other team, they missed all there 3 pointers to tie the game and we took the win in…

But a Korean powerful athlete from the opposite team was unbeatable. We could not defend him separately. So what trick we used was to chuck the area and each one of us slapped him, held him from the shirt and troubled him frustratingly at our level best. If it would not be a basketball game, one could imagine that there is some fight going on. But such trick is allowed in the pick-up basketball for the defense.…

Only a few hours after the awkward conversation with mother, I was already to leave the house. I can’t really explain the feeling I had one the way to the party because it was a mixture of emotions, such as nervous to dance with strangers (especially Paris), scared that I will embarrass myself in front of everyone with my horrible dance moves and on a positive note, excited, after all this is my first time attending such a big party. When I entered the venue which was so beautifully set up, I immediately started to greet everyone, one of them including Paris. It was a very difficult to start a conversation and it involved many silent pauses. If it wasn’t for the entertainers to start singing slower songs for us to dance together with, I don’t think I could have carried on any further. Anyway, after a shaky start, we got on quite well once we began dancing.…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

He sets the ball down and blows the whistle. I run up as hard as I can and kick the ball in the corner. The ball is bouncing around, but my teammate gets a handle on it and crosses it to me for my first goal of the season 5 minutes into the game! Then, it happened. I am so excited jumping around with my teammates as I hear a pop from my knee. I panic and I collapse to the ground crying. My mom comes onto the court and carries me off. She tells me we have to go to the ER as I refuse to move. She then forces me up and then off to the ER we…

Four days after I got a message from an old friend named Sonia asking me if I still lived in the yellow house with the cool ramps, I responded, “Yes? Why?” I didn’t get a response after till 20mins later I saw her walking to my porch with roses in her hand, I opened the door and gave her this weird, shocking, confused look. I didn’t mean to but I haven’t spoken to Sonia after 5th grade not because we got in a huge fight or that we were too cool to talk to each other, we just both went with different crowds. I welcomes her in and she gave me and hug and said that she wanted to stop by because she knew how much my sister meant to me and that she thought it was right for her to come here and show her respects in person than through via internet. I didn’t speak much cause I was shocked I mean this was my best friend in elementary.…
