The Importance Of Bad Hops In Baseball
“When life gives you bad hops, make great plays” -Anonymous

This quote relates bad hops in baseball to obstacles in my life and making great plays to overcoming those obstacles. This brings me to my laws of life which are how to deal with failure, and how to make the best of a bad situation put before you. I will be relating both of these laws to experiences I've had in baseball. I made the realization that failure is healthy and can only make me stronger. Before I made these realizations, whenever I would fail I would get down on myself and lose confidence. I’ve also had to make the best of an unfortunate situation that occurred during the baseball season. These are my laws of life.

“It may never heal completely, but I would like you to sit out this season to avoid further injury.”

I was devastated. My entire offseason of hard work would be put to waste. I realized that unless I wanted my season to be ruined I had to find another way to help my team out. One way I helped my team was by learning how to keep score of baseball games so that one of my coaches didn’t have to do it during the game. I also made it to almost every game during that season so I could cheer my team on. At the end of the season, my coach came up to me and told me how much he appreciated how I made an effort to support our team even though I couldn’t participate. This made me realize how much of an impact I had made even though I hadn’t played.
In my essay, I went over how I overcome failure on a daily basis, and how I made the best out of a bad situation. The quote, “When life gives you bad hops, make great plays,” describes the situation with my back injury. This is because when the injury occurred I didn’t get down on myself I turned it into an opportunity to try new things, and to have fun supporting my team. I also described how I overcome failure on a daily basis by keeping a positive

When the first game came I was extremely happy yet nervous also. We ended up winning the game by the score of three runs to two although I did not get to bat at all and was put in only for two innings of defense. I was disappointed that I did not get to play much but I was happy with the win. Our second game was the next day and I hoped to get more playing time then. When that day came it turned out that we were playing an extremely skilled team. We were losing three to one in the last inning and I still hadn’t played at all the whole game. One of my friends hit a double and then another one of my teammates hit a single to knock him in to score. The score was now three to two and we had a chance to come back. My coach then decided that we needed someone faster on the bases so he called for a…

Many people want to believe they are the best and if they aren’t they should just give up. Derek Jeter once said “ there may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that.” This quote is known as one of the most inspirational quotes for athletes. Jeter’s quote has been applied to the lives of many athletes, especially Jessica Long, Babe Ruth, and himself. . It has affected those individuals in different ways and taught them different things. Each athlete has had a rough patch or difficulty in their sport(s) but they knew that they had to work at it instead of just giving up. That is what made these three good athletes.…

The first day of try outs, I stepped out on the field with a nervous feeling in my stomach but a confident look on my face. Among the girls I was the smallest and the youngest, but I never let that discourage me. I was a fourteen year old girl passionate about the sport with a bit of natural talent, but had more than enough to learn. I was trying out for second base along with two older girls who were both bigger and had more experience. I was doing everything it took to prove to the coach and to the girls that I was worthy of a starting position. It was a long stressful week of tryouts, but I made it through feeling confident that I had made the team, yet I was still nervous because anything could happen. The coach finally posted the list of the names of the girls who made the team. I waited eagerly for the older girls to move so I could see the list; when I finally got to the front and saw my name on the list, I was excited but more relieved than anything. It was like a huge weight off my chest, but I knew I still had a long way to go. We had about a month until our first preseason game, and until then we wouldn't know who was starting in each position.…

During my senior season I slide into third base our first game of the year and jammed my shoulder. I had to go to the doctors and they said it was very inflamed and that I would have to sit out for most of the season. Being my last year in high school that news really brought me down. When I went to the next game I realized that I could not contribute on the field, but I could have a great influence on the players in and from the dugout. I cheered on my teammates at every game and during every inning until I could finally return to play at the end of the year. That experience taught me that no matter what happens there is always another way to positively impact someone, you just have to clear your mind and…

I was very excited and happy that all of my hard work in the batting cages and at practice was finally starting to pay off. I knew that I had to remain humble and keep working hard to be successful. My parents have molded me into the person I am today and I knew that I couldn't use this spotlight as an excuse to quit working hard. Our goal as a team was to make it to the state tournament. We ended up losing in the first round of sub-state. Losses and moments like that leave you with a feeling that you never want to feel again. At the end of the day, I ended up telling my parents that I wanted to continue playing baseball. All of this thinking made me realize that thinking before acting will usually end up in happy and good decision. Without all of this thought, I might of quit baseball, and been an introvert. Playing baseball really helps me let off some steam, so I can focus on the present and the future instead of thinking about the past and holding a grudge on someone. We should all think about decisions thoroughly so we can be happy, which will lead to being happy and having…

There will always be hard times throughout our lives, but if we do not handle them appropriately they can destroy us. Attending college has exposed me to ways of handling adversity because my mom can no longer handle my problems for me. A few days ago in English class I have learned one of the most effective ways of dealing with hardship. So recently, I have come to the conclusion instead of giving up I will “tackle my obstacles” with faith, perseverance and excellence.…

We have all found ourselves in situations, where all we wish for is to leave, and for it to be over. There are times where we question, why things happen to us, and why we must suffer. I believe that this law of life is the perfect solutions for these situations and questions. This law of life means that no matter what situation you are in, you should still try to enjoy yourself and make the best of everything that is given to you. I chose this quote because I believe if you be positive in a rough position, then you can withstand anything that life launches at you. These are the moments that keep us waking up in the mornings, and going to bed at night. Living by this quote means we should go out with an optimistic attitude, with our heads held high, and ready to enjoy everything the world has to give to us no matter what has happened.…

Ian Thorpe’s story teaches us that even though we have the most unrealistic goals in life, it is more important to go down fighting, not leaving behind any last regrets. One could be convinced that the more you fail in life, the better chances you have to learn from your mistakes and become successful. Failure leads to a greater understanding and wisdom for us to overcome our obstacles and have a better and brighter future. It is everyone’s dream to be successful, but this success is rarely given to anyone, because everyone has hurdles to get over and their own set of trials and tribulations. We can agree with this because life teaches us what is correct to do and what is not. What is really important in life are the lessons learned from these events, teaching you more about yourself and the task in which you are attempting to be successful in, and there is no better teacher than failure.…

My first experience that I chose to support the quote deals with my favorite sport, irish dance. After dancing for close to 10 years, I have experienced this situation many times. Irish dancing is a very competitive sport, that really takes a toll on you both physically and emotionally. I know myself and many other dancers have gotten to points where we question why we still even do the sport. We get frustrated and can't even remember why we love dancing so much. I remember towards the end of last year I had one of these attitudes. Regionals was in November and I hadn’t done as well as I had wanted to. I really hadn’t put in enough effort and practice leading up to regionals. Even though I knew deep down it was really my own fault, I made excuses for myself and blamed my failure on everything but myself. I blamed my teacher for not preparing me enough. I blamed the judges for not judging correctly and I blamed about everything else I could except for me. Eventually, I had come to terms that it was my own fault, nobody else’s. Once I recognized this, I lost my bad attitude and started fresh. I now was going to put in the necessary effort to rank where I wanted to be. I realized that I was the only one who was able to make a difference in…
