Personal Narrative-Learning The Tricks Of The Trade
Learning the Tricks of the Trade I had been a football fan all my life as a teenager going into high school. I never had the balls to play though. This all changed during the end of my sophomore year of high school when I decided I would sign up to join the football team for the upcoming season. I understood the game, the lingo, and how to play. I had just never played organized football before. I was nervous, having really no experience whatsoever. After my first few practices, my coaches told me I had large amounts of potential and that I should take advantage of it and work my butt off. That’s what I did. Summer practice was an interesting experience for me. The normal process is that the team does conditioning and practice with no pads starting in late June. Then, in late July, we start with pads. Practicing with pads on was very …show more content…
“I have to go into the game thinking I’m going to win it. I’m going to do it for my team. For everyone.”
“That’s my boy. Don’t be a pussy. Pussies don’t win. Now go to sleep, you have a big game tomorrow.”
We won the first game 48 to 28. I threw for 220 yards and 3 touchdown passes. I was on top of the world. I was king of the school, and I had never been happier. My coach told me to keep my cool around all the hype and everything, but I couldn’t contain myself. I got hotheaded and it ended up biting me in the ass.
The next week I went into it thinking I was the best quarterback in the world. I thought the next game would be a cakewalk. I was wrong. We ended up losing by 21. What my coach said to me the previous week was one of the most important things I could’ve learned. Keep your cool and don’t underestimate your opponent. I took these words to heart and, just like that, the team started running on all cylinders again. We won 10 straight and found ourselves in the CIF Semi-finals. We were up against a team that was regarded as one of the best in all of California, but my team remained

However, I was in a package against Big Lake and I shut down receiver. The following week in practice while I was working harder than even Coach Herberg came up to me and said “I’m starting you at the corner this week. You had a good game and you deserve it. Good job kid.” We were playing Willmar and I was very nervous. It was my first varsity start. Coaches said that was normal and said for me to relax. I played extremely well and I was very proud of myself. The following three weeks I have started and became more confrontable with playing on Friday night. My focus level was as high as ever and I was improving my talent day by day. Hard work does really pay off. I worked hard and did my job throughout the year and on the field. I listened to my coaches and stayed true to myself and I sure did pay off. I’m playing varsity and had kept the promise I had with myself last…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

The first day of try outs, I stepped out on the field with a nervous feeling in my stomach but a confident look on my face. Among the girls I was the smallest and the youngest, but I never let that discourage me. I was a fourteen year old girl passionate about the sport with a bit of natural talent, but had more than enough to learn. I was trying out for second base along with two older girls who were both bigger and had more experience. I was doing everything it took to prove to the coach and to the girls that I was worthy of a starting position. It was a long stressful week of tryouts, but I made it through feeling confident that I had made the team, yet I was still nervous because anything could happen. The coach finally posted the list of the names of the girls who made the team. I waited eagerly for the older girls to move so I could see the list; when I finally got to the front and saw my name on the list, I was excited but more relieved than anything. It was like a huge weight off my chest, but I knew I still had a long way to go. We had about a month until our first preseason game, and until then we wouldn't know who was starting in each position.…

So we kinda knew we were gonna win, but we didn’t want to jinx it and lose. We had a fantastic game and won 14-1. I had a total 0 plays out in the outfield and that sure was a whole lot of fun. I went 3-4 when I was batting which is ok but I could have gone 4-4, Since I wasn’t seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand I was late on the ball and was all in all, a bad game. Our season was doing really well and ended really poorly, It ended by us losing 9-1, We were not happy nor were we upset that we lost. but we understood we needed to get better. Whereas High school baseball is gonna be way better cause we don’t play the same teams we play easier teams. Which is nice because we will win much easier and not have any competition. The high school team consistently wins regionals which is cool and they have been to state a couple…

Tom Izzo has coached the Michigan State Spartans for the past 18 years. His vast accomplishments include winning one national championship (2000), reaching six final four appearances, and collecting seven Big Ten titles. Even though Izzo has been named the nation’s best coach eight times, he doesn’t shed away from his, what I call, “grit to glory.” What do I mean by that? He created a rebounding drill called “war” where his players wear football helmets and pads. His motto, “players play – tough players win," emphasizes the importance of toughness in his program. I admire this most of all his teachings. First, preaching toughness allows him to receive the most out of his players. Creating a sense of purpose to lay everything on the line allows absolute accountability from every player. Next, it reminds me of my father. He has always asked and preached for me to do right and give everything I had. It taught me how to carry myself on and off the court, which is exactly what I see every time I watch Spartan basketball. Last, it’s proven to work. Michigan State is a powerhouse in College Basketball.…

Learning from mistakes is a key part of life. I myself have had to learn from my mistakes. Over the summer I cut my foot outside.
