Somewhere in the Middle East there is a mom fighting in a foreign war. The gunpowder smoke coagulating in her lungs, hearing the cries for help, and not knowing if she’ll ever see her 2 year old son again. Soldiers everywhere do this every day not knowing if they are going home ever to see their loved ones. They do this because they are selfless and are heroes. That’s why an American I believe in is made possible by the sacrifices of our military.…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

“You are order to active duty as a member of your reserve component unit for the period indicated unless sooner released or unless extended. Proceed from your current location in sufficient time to report by the date specified. You enter active duty upon reporting to unit home station”. These were the words telling me that I was going to Iraq, to fight and destroy the enemies of the United States of America and face one of my biggest challenges yet. Soon after I received my orders in the mail I had a dilemma, what’s going to happen when I tell my mother and the rest of my family? Have I been taking my family and friends for granted, now that I have this situation in front of me I realize that maybe I should have tried…

Significant events allow us as humans to achieve characteristics that we once did not think we could. Joining the military is the big umbrella above all of my significant events. Prior to the military, I was a cashier at a gift shop. Friends did not think that I was cut out for the military but I have proven them wrong. Throughout the years, I have grown to have confidence in all things I believe in. I have become daring, I do not like to take “no” for an answer, and I always think that where there is a will there is a way. These significant events have made me self-confident. I joined the military 14 years ago. Prior to me joining, I had some goals set for myself; however, due to the many obstacles that I was experiencing, I did…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. On a quiet Sunday morning at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison, Indiana, I was welcomed into this world via c-section. With my mother completely unconscious, my father was first to hold my whopping nine-pound six-ounce body. I was bald and twenty and a half inches in length. I arrived at 7:57 on January 8, 1999, and the weather was below freezing and snowy. For my mother, giving birth was an occurrence that she never intended to endure. Before my mother had me at the age of thirty nine, she went through multiple abortions. She had never wanted kids, but my father convinced her to…

The coach bus door erupted openly with such an enormous force, I felt my spine blench. I was accost in the early dawn before the sun had risen to the crisp morning air; however, the morning air was not nearly as frigid as the next few moments awaiting me. I couldn't help being affected by the barrage of verbal abuse flowing from this welcoming committee. Regardless, one question they asked stood out to me in particular,…

When I first stepped into Anderson High School as a freshman, I was exceedingly confident in myself. I played sports, had gotten good grades, and planned to have an amazing high school career. Freshman and sophomore year were a breeze. If I am being straightforward, I did not focus much on my schoolwork. I did what was required of me and got good grades, but I did not go above and beyond. I had always been told by upperclassman, “It only gets harder from here. Enjoy it while you can.” Now I realize what that means.…
