I, SPC Melissa Vicenty, am currently a junior at East Stroudsburg University majoring in Business Management. This semester ends May 5, 2017. I understand my Military Duty has precedence over civilian duties and it is mandatory by law that civilian workplaces give the soldier the necessary time off to complete their military duties. I have talked to my superiors at school and it is possible for me to take my finals after
I get back from training, however it would not be practical. It would not be practical due to the fact that my textbook from the school bookstore is due the last day of the semester which is May 5 and my online access to my homework and quizzes for 3 of my classes will be expiring May 11. If I take my finals when I return from AT I would not have the proper resources to study for my exams. If I were to take my finals without studying and fail my exam there is a possibility I may fail the class. As a result to failing my class, I would end up having to pay back the money I received from TA, which is $3,000 that I do not have allocated for the army.
With having this dilemma, I propose a solution. I propose to do my AT on any dates following May 23, 2017 at home station. The reason for choosing this date is because that is the date that I return from studying abroad for the independent study that I have this semester. It has come to my attention that home station usually not an option for soldiers since the unit would have to house them in a hotel for the time they are on order, which is something the unit most likely does not have the funds to do. The solution for that is not needing placement in a hotel for the duration of home station AT. The reasons for not needing placement is because my mother lives 15 minutes from the unit and if my mother’s house is not available my school apartment is 30 minutes away from the unit as well. These two locations are reasonable locations to stay at while I attend home station AT since they do not even fall under criteria to apply for LIK during regular drill weekends.
