Personal Narrative: My Ability In Math
In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties. When I took math I, I mostly got B’s and C’s on my tests, because I had a hard time understanding the material, or asking the teacher if I needed help with a certain concept. Overall, I think my average grade for math would be a B, but I would like to improve this year and get an A for a final grade. My parents definitely contributed to my overall success. If I didn’t have their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I disliked learning trigonometry and graphing functions. I took math II online, so I wasn’t able to really use a worksheet and graph any problems for myself. I liked the substitution
method to solve equations, and just finding the value of ‘x’ overall. I disliked that my math teacher last year didn’t really play a role in my education, other than grading certain assignments. My favorite was my seventh grade math teacher, because she was really nice and caring and always tried to help her students as much as possible. I think that I will do alright in this class, as long as I stay focused and on task, and make sure to ask questions when needed. Notes will most likely be the most help to me. I am worried about how reliable I will be if my classmates need help. Being in a class with mostly sophomores makes me nervous, and I don’t really know what to expect or how they will act. Older students can be intimidating sometimes for me. When I graduate from college, I would like to be a veterinarian, or someone who works on making prosthetic limbs or body parts for animals. I believe it is health science related, but I’m not sure if the health classes at WECHS would apply to animals as well. I think that to some degree I would need to use math, maybe when deciding on dosages for medicines or measurements for a cast. Taking this course will prepare me to be able to get the degrees in college that I need to achieve my career goals.
