Personal Narrative: My Band Trip To Colorado
“Boom!” went the old, rusty bus motor.
It was six in the morning when the church bus left with all the church band members. The morning was still dark and cold. We have planned this band trip to Colorado for a while now. Everyone was excited for the eleven hour drive. At about five in the morning everyone has started meeting up at church. Blankets around our bodies, boots and warm slippers on our feet, and drowsy eyes, but we were ready for this trip. I remember that it was very chilly, dark, autumn morning. Everyone packed extraordinarily warm clothes for Colorado, so the bags we packed were very packed. By six we drove out of the church parking lot.
Time flew by fast. The views were very pleasing. We got to about Toronto, Kansas where

It took about three hours and we stopped in Burlington. Everyone leaves the bus to go freshen up. As soon as everyone was moving toward the bus, I see that the band director, also my uncle, and my cousin are trying to put the motor back into the bus. The rusty motor literally fell out of the bus. It took them about six minutes just to put the motor back in. We get to the actual gas pump, because we were in the middle of the gas station, and start to fill up the bus. Right after we fill up the tank, everyone was hurried into the bus. As everyone settles down, we are then ready to go. “Boom!” goes the old bus motor. At first we were shocked, but then everyone decided to go see what happened.
“What was that?” asked many of the band members. We saw that the motor was on the ground. We didn’t know how that happened. My uncle was sure that he put it back into place. So, we stood in the gas station parking lot for about an hour and then realized that we had a second motor.
Once they put in the replacement, we started our way back to Colorado. There were only six hours left. By the time we got to Colorado, it was about eleven at night. The host told the band director to call him and tell him that we got to Colorado. Since it was about twelve, we didn’t call and slept in the bus at a truck

First my youth group and I got in the old, worn down, party van that would take us to the time of our life. I felt the comforting air conditioner on my face. I heard the rusted engine growl to a start. I smelled the saltiness of the chip bags opening, and the fruitiness of gum being chomped. That’s when I finally knew that our journey had begun. We…

It’s midnight and as I expected, a black Ford F-150 Truck with tinted windows pulls up to my house. I walk outside holding a backpack with my portable speakers and a baseball bat. However, I quickly change my mind and leave the baseball bat inside the house. I hop into the back seat of the truck and am greeted by four large burly kids. “What’s up Matt?” says Ben who is sitting in the drivers seat. With music blasting, Ben takes off the parking brake and presses his foot down onto the gas pedal. Soon we are heading down dark winding roads as we listen to music from Captain Murphy, which contributes to our mischievous mood. Finally we arrive.…

When I woke up, I felt so well rested. It was just barely light out, so I decided to go back to sleep until they blew the whistles for us to come in around 7:00am. Except, when I woke up for the second time, the sky was completely black. Apparently, what I had mistaken for early morning was actually just an hour or so after I had gone to sleep in the first place. It was definitely going to be a long…

“ Come and eat.” Joe,the leader of the trip, struggled to say because he was so tired, “Breakfast is going to be light this morning because we have along day head of us.” We all struggled to get out of our tents considering it was 5:30am and there was a mountain we had to start climbing in a half hour. All thirteen of us stood in a line like we did the morning before while we packed our lunches. The options available to us were an apple, cheese stick, peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches, but only 2 per person, yogurt and 2 bottles of water. All of that would have to fit into a back pack with us the would be stuck to our backs for the rest of the day. “Time to load!” Joe shouted. We all got into the van that seated 16, single file until very seat was filled.…

Bands of America was very cool this year! The bus ride went very well, only problem being that every bump hit would rewind the movie that was playing. Once we got there everything went very smoothly. I got to help the band moms put the hat boxes in order! Warm ups there were a lot of jitters in the air it seemed, but not bad ones. Waiting to get on the field was extremely nerve wracking. But, once we got on the field everything seemed nice and mellow, like we were back on the field at home, it just had a different crowd and background. I feel really good about the performance. We did the best we could do and our best got us third in our class! Heading to the hotel and getting to lay down and rest was very nice and much needed. The food was…

We were almost through the state of North Carolina as we traveled on Interstate 95. It was rush hour and you could tell everyone was antsy and excited to get home. Cars traveled at 80 miles per hour, and some were even traveling faster than that. I could now see why it was ranked the fifth worst highway in North America. Cars were weaving in and out of traffic at over 90 miles per hour. Traffic was getting heavy. Listening to the radio, my dad and I sang along to a familiar song we both knew, “Yeah” by Usher. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”, we both sang while he drove. My dad always loved this song, so we had the radio turned almost all the way up. The song ended and we turned the radio down. We had already been on the road for ten hours so we were beginning to get a little tired. It was almost 5:00 in the evening and we did not eat lunch, so we were both getting hungry as well. “Where do you want to stop for dinner?”, I asked him. My dad looked at the food signs next to the highway as I looked up places on my phone where we could grab a bite. Just as I was about to name off a few places where we could go, my phone flew out of my hand and my head jolted forward.…

When I think of term rock and roll, I remember watching MTV and seeing Axel Rose scream into the microphone with his whinny voice the lyrics of “Paradise City” while dancing across the stage in his ridiculous outfits. My father would nostalgically reminisce of the epic guitar solos of the Eagles, Don Felder. My father being a teenager during the height of the rock music era afforded him certain opportunities to see the big hair bands perform live during their prime. When I was still a boy, he would tell me stories of concerts he had been to and rock legends he had met. I had always wanted to have such an experience and last month my wish was finally granted.…

I leaned toward the window where my pillow was pressed against the car door. I watched the lightning a few miles to away from the car as it lit up the mountains. Compass by Zella Day played through my headphones as I sat up to look through the windshield. I took my headphones out and my friend/cousin, Amaya, sat up excitedly in her seat. It was the first time she’d ever taken this trip. The city lights below sparkled. Amaya’s mom, JoAnn, and our uncle Bill played songs from “their time” as we drove down toward Las Vegas.…
