Personal Narrative: My Change In Nicaragua
About seven billion people live in this world, each beating heart goes through their own changes, whether it’s becoming a military personnel or simply running away from your home and experience the world through your own eyes. My significant change came at an early stage, without any hesitation my parents sent my sister and I to Nicaragua for 4 years. After we landed the only person I knew that spoke English or was from Miami was the flight attendant itself, after that it was my sister and I against a family that we briefly recognize.

It was mentioned that Nicaragua, was a poor country but at that time, it was nonsense to a seven year old child that basically was given everything with just a cry. Upon our arrival in the city, where we were going to spend our next few years,we saw the house we would be living in; the house was worn out, made of poor -quality materials. As a child, you don’t understand situations at that instant, and we only thought this change was going to be temporary. We had to share and pray to God for the food that we were given, I remember that sometimes the only meal available would be beans with tortilla.

My mother would always weep to hear the voice of a young man ,who has taken care of himself and his little sister. My father was more than proud of the person who I was becoming, and in that moment I realized these certain changes that were occurring through my life. Numerous of flashbacks of when I had to walk from school holding my young sister's tiny hand, or when I had to bring errands such as vegetables or tortillas for dinner, all the responsibilities I was given everyday to complete, it was to help me become the person I am today. I have seen young people nowadays, and it’s hard to watch them mistreat their parents and not give them the proper love and respect they really

Never have I woken up faster than getting a phone call at 1am saying, “I need you STAT to H4104!” Racing from the call room to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, I had a million thoughts running through my head. Why is the RN calling me STAT? Is the patient coding? Is the intra-aortic balloon pump I am responsible for not functioning? When I arrive, the patient’s pressures were spiraling downward and the surgeon said he must go back down for surgery. Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I realized this was not an emergency simulation I had been taught – this was real. As soon as we reach the OR, the patient went asystole. Immediately, anesthesia started injecting medications, the OR staff lined up to do compressions and I managed the balloon pump; we…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

Living back in the Dominican Republic I used to have a very easy life. Then I was living in my grandparents’ house in the suburb; where everything was very repeatedly: Wake up, eat, go to school, go back home, eat, do homework, play, eat once again and go back to sleep. Weekends were my favorites though; every Sunday we would go out for lunch, which usually I would be the one to pick, and as an usual seven-eight years old child my favorite thing back then was Pizza.…

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

Nicaragua suffers from serious social problems, aggravated by warfare and economic crises. The economic crisis of the 1980s, coupled with the Contra War, has worsened the greatest social problems Nicaragua has faced in the past few decades, namely unemployment, poverty and starvation. Widespread poverty and unemployment have lead to housing shortages, malnutrition and rising crime and illiteracy. More than half of Nicaraguans live in poverty; the statistics for unemployment and underemployment are just as high.…

The place I grew up in could be considered above average. I had my friends that I would see every day and my family back at home. However, everything that any of us did would be over the top in every way possible. This became especially evident when my family and I would begin to plan a party or travel, this improvement of activities would be known as the “Mexican Way”. To be more specific, my family and I turned a normal New Year’s Eve party into a colorful and explosive fiesta. At first it seemed normal, we bought all the fireworks, started getting all the food ready for the party, and all my cousins and uncles started to arrive at my house; but as soon as it got dark everything started to get out of hand. As the first bottle rockets went…

My mother and sisters tried to tell me that parenthood would change my life and that it would be hard, but I didn’t know how hard or how my life was about to change. When everybody at the grocery store was staring at me because my son was throwing one of temper tantrums or I had been taking care of a feverish, vomiting baby all night long it was hard to remember that being a parent was a gift. But then I’d see a sleeping, beautiful baby or my son would draw a picture of a giant, smiling, stick-figure mom with a red crayon heart, and then I would remember. I have a…

Just the thought of it haunted my dreams for nights, days, months, and even years. My parents had made the decision of moving out of my country, into a whole new world. We were moving to the United States, to McAllen Texas to be more specific. I knew this change would change my life forever, I knew my life would never be the same.…

My life story begins with my parents. My parents were married when my mother was only 17, and my father was 25. This age difference caused many a rift between the two and they eventually divorced when I was seven-years-old, and my older sister was eight. This short family experience gave me a foundation that maintained some structure in my young life, having been achieved in my most formative years. After the divorce, our father rarely saw us and often did not show up for appointed visits. My mother would bad-mouth him to us, which only brought more pain. When I was nine, my mother remarried and her and my stepdad took up the bottle. They did not provide a stable environment for us children and were often out drinking while we girls stayed at home.…

Everyone has that certain someone who has touched their hearts before, you know that someone who has impacted you enough to change your outlook at life. You may be able to think of this person in your own life and how much they’ve affected you. Well throughout my life my dad has become that certain someone. Through the morals she has taught me, the great examples she has set, and the way she carries herself she has easily shaped my life and made me into the person I am today and is the reason why I’ve inducted her into the Greatest Dad Hall of Fame. Since a youngin my dad has always expected me to act in a suitable manner she expects this from me because she has taught me the values that I should live by. Ever since I been little I have always been going to church, I go to Trinity United Church of Christ. They’ve taken me here not only to worship god, but also to learn why I should stay true to my values. My mother has helped me to put god first, to forever stay in my faith, and not to be afraid to stand up for what I believe in. As I go through what we call life, I will be faced with the many temptations that the world has to offer. With what my mother has taught me I now know to never run from the person that I am, not to follow with what everyone else is doing but to be myself forming my own journey. I know I can achieve these things because my mother has set a great example on how to live respectively. Everyone has had their bad shares of life, but not everyone sets good examples for those who may be going through the same situation. My mother has always set a good example for me and my 3 brothers for she’s a project administrator for Accenture. There have been days where she has come home filled with a lot of frustration and stress. her boss could have had a bad day which caused her to have one as well, or she could have of had a whole bunch of work piled up that she haven’t caught up on yet for whatever the reason was she continues to stay strong.…
