Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Resident Assistant
I anticipate that the most challenging aspect of the CLS Program will be the limited downtime to recharge and de-stress. However, my experiences as a Resident Assistant (RA) make me confident in my ability to adapt to these challenges and thrive in the CLS environment.

Being an RA is a time intensive role, as it requires constant daily interaction with residents, and the ability to immediately respond to crises that arise within the residence halls. In addition to being an RA I am a full time student carrying 18 credit hours and working a part time job. For my RA position, I have received training on individual coping mechanisms for managing stress such as breathing exercises and group based games for dealing with stress. I will use this training to cope with my own personal stress during the CLS Program and to help my fellow colleagues manage their stress.

I take full advantage of all language opportunities at the University of Maryland including participating in weekly speaking sessions with native Arabic speakers. I am at a point in my Arabic studies where I have gained the language confidence to fully benefit from the immersive linguistic experience offered by the CLS

One of my most significant team experiences comes from working with my Co-Resident Advisor (RA) when one of our residents blacked out. One evening a resident came to me because her roommate was in the bathroom vomiting after a night out. My Co-RA and I took control of the situation by delegating the tasks that needed to get done and implementing the appropriate protocol. While my Co-RA called the paramedics, I attended to the student in distress and asked the resident about the events that had transpired earlier that evening. Then my Co-RA informed me that the paramedics were on the way while I recounted to her what the residents told me. Once the paramedics arrived, I went to escort them up while my Co-RA stayed with the residents. After the…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

As I was looking for a Physician Assistant program I focused on three main things: research, prestige, and location. Their perseverance, ability to react efficiently and decisively in difficult situations are some of the many qualities that Yale highlights and solidifies in its programs. Furthermore, shadowing one of the physician assistants who graduated from the Yale program gave me a better insight on the rigorously, expectations, and preparations of Yale PA program.…

Walking into work I smell the aromas of a nursing home. I hear the sounds of wheel chairs and walkers scraping against the hard wood surface. As I walk to station one, I stop by the break room to store my food. The room is full of people charting the prior shift. Walking out of the room, I continue to station one. Finding the cork board with the neon green paper, I see what hall I am working. There is only my name and one other on spring hall. I know it is going to be a rough night; but at the end, I will remember my goal, which is helping others.…
