Personal Narrative: My Experience At Camp Elim
Many experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, including time spent counseling at a summer camp, several mission trips to the island of Trinidad and Tobago, and the consistent love and support of my family. However, I believe that the role I played as a counselor to young girls was the most formative experience in regards to my character and my passion for being a good role model. Throughout the seven years that I attended Camp Elim, I grew immensely and learned how to be a follower of Jesus. After experiencing so much growth, I was excited to take up the position of a counselor and lead other girls. Having dealt with anxiety myself for several years, I was able to relate to this sweet camper and encourage her. Through this experience, I realized that I can use the hard events of my past to give hope to younger girls. I learned how to deal with my own difficult situations through helping others. On another occasion, I was responsible for resolving conflict between several of my campers. Misunderstanding and offense caused confrontation in my cabin and multiple girls were upset. At first, I was unsure how to handle the situation, but by talking to each of the girls individually and encouraging them to see things from one another's perspectives, we were able to settle the misunderstanding. As a result of this experience, I grew in my ability to consider multiple viewpoints in order to come to a peaceful resolution. I am so grateful for the time I have invested in Camp Elim. Both as a camper and a counselor, my experiences have shaped my identity and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I now have confidence as a leader and understand how to establish peace between opposing sides. I also have a deeper appreciation of the importance of being a good role model to younger girls. By living my life in a way that honors others and prioritizes selflessness, I can guide the girls who look up to
