Personal Narrative: My Experience In Prison
At the age of seven I enter prison, my life took a different direction at a young age where I was surrounded by people I didn’t know and faces I never recognize or even known existed. That was the day I came to America, imagine being taken away from the one place you called home to another dimension where people spoke a complete different language from the one you knew since birth. The angry and confused, I felt was intense, trying to figure out where I belong in such a huge place without actually knowing where I was. That is how I felt when my mother took me away from my one true home, having no control and say because I was only 7 I had to go with it. What I thought was prison completely change my life and who I am as a person today. My

Time is winding down and the past thirty nine weeks has been nothing short but amazing. It has been full of different emotions and feelings. From the stretching of the skin to the sudden movement I have never felt before. It was all a new experience, but the feeling was indescribable. After a restless night, the sunrise appeared before I knew it. The pain was unbearable, but after several hours and a couple of good pushes you were here. I was extremely exhausted, but the relief was absolutely amazing. At first sight I fell in love with you. Not for how you look, just for who you are. I never thought I could feel affection like this. What is this? Is this how it's assume to feel or even resemble? It's kind of insane how you, only one individual,…

At the tender age of eighteen, I began my career as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Corrections at the Ellis I Unit in Huntsville, Texas, a town with population of only about 30,000 people, but with seven prisons and more than 13,000 inmates. I attended a lengthy and thorough pre-service training academy that was conducted for eight hours every day for two weeks. All trainees were required to live in dormitories together as a group so we could sleep, eat, breathe, and drink corrections. There were about fifty trainees going through the academy at the same time. We were an interesting bunch with about half of the group being young guys like me looking for their first real job and the other half being forty-something military or law enforcement retirees wanting to pursue a new career. There were no women in my academy class. Women at the time could be found in support positions that were primarily clerical, but would not play a direct contact role in male corrections in Texas until 1984 (US Department of Justice, 1991).…

There are many obstacles that an inmate who is about to be released from prison after 25years would have to cross (Schmalleger, & Smykla, 2015). An inmate who is leaving prison would have to start their life over from the beginning. When the inmate is released from prison they would have to find housing if there are no friends or family to help them, they would have to find a job, and they would have to learn how to manage their money. In the new age of technology, they would be lost with never have seen smartphones, emails, texting, apps, and even the advancement of computers.…

Many studies and surveys have shown that millions of dollars of our taxpayer’s money is spent on the criminal justice system to house federal prisoners and the different programs a prisoner must go through to be introduced back into society. Even though there is much controversy on the cost of these programs, the public is in strong agreement that parolees should be highly supervised and retrained to be a good law abiding citizen. The process the government uses to release a person back into society along with federal probation is a good way to control the parolee until the person has proven themselves.…

A prison is a penal institution administered by the state or federal government. It is a place for the confinement of persons convicted of criminal offenses and is therefore part of a larger penal system, which includes other aspects of criminal justice such as courts, law enforcement, and crime labs. Nevertheless, many people are critical of the US’s prison system the idea of locking up those who commit crimes against a society simply to keep them from doing harm. Many say that more rehabilitation is necessary to improve these individuals and, therefore, society as a whole. Although there are many aspects in regards to prison life, I plan to discuss what it is like to be an inmate in the California prison system.…

One of my favorite extracurricular activities I participated in was Mock Trial. It consisted of long hours and preparation. I learned scripts, objections, and how to just act in court in general. This year was hilariously disastrous. We had gotten a new coach, and he decided that we needed to do more prep and have less practices, but completely neglected to remember that this year's team comprised of mostly first time participants. He also kept changing everyone's roles. Pretending to be a witness gave me such a thrill, like could I really pull this off? And this year I did, I received compliments from the judge and the other team. I would like to say we won but we didn’t. It is never our goal to win, but to learn from our mistakes. And…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

Going to jail was no fun. It started off with a police officer placing me in handcuffs. The handcuffs were so tight that my hands went numb. Then I took a long ride in the back of a police car. I had to lean to the side so that I could ease the pressure of the handcuffs on my wrists. Next I arrived at the inmate-processing center. From the moment the door closed behind me, I was treated like inventory. I was photographed. I was fingerprinted. My money and car keys were taken. I was assigned a number so that I could be tracked and identified. I was placed in a cold cell made of concrete. I sat and waited for hours. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I lost track of time because there were no clocks on the wall. I couldn’t tell if it was day or night. Jail is the most disturbing place I have ever been to.…

“African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population” (N.D. , 2016). In my opinion, If you grew up with going to visit parents and relatives at a prison, It will become your norm. Most African American children grow up with one or more parent or relative in prison or jail. I personally don’t understand how a child could have a fair chance at life under those circumstances. When I was a Correctional Officer, I have experienced an incident that I would never forget. An inmate came into the intake process and was highly upset. We instructed him to calm down and after he did, he started telling us why he was upset? The inmate stated that he didn’t do anything wrong and he shouldn't be there. We inspected…
