Personal Narrative: My Experience On The Battlefield
A reflective journal, on what I experienced on the staff ride to the battlefield from the battle at horse bend and the of the staff ride. I got a completely different prospective of terrain when I actually walked on the Battlefield. I feel that the preservation of theses historical site will keep the heritage alive and increase the interest in learning our history.

From the top of the hill, the battlefield looked relatively flat. For this point one could see the barricade that the Red sticks had constructed, the staging area that the troops were the troops lined up, and the advantage position of the cannon was placed to fire directly on the fortification. This is clearly how I pictured it from the reading and lessons on the battle. If

Despite the name, the actual battle took place on Breed’s Hill. According to Mission Command, a commander must understand the operational environment and the problem. This is important because a commander must clearly understand the mission to unify a formation and accomplish a task. Due to its closer proximity to Boston, COL Prescott’s lack of understanding was evident in his decision to fortify Breed’s Hill instead of Bunker Hill.2 Since Breed’s Hill was closer to the water, it had less protection and concealment from the British Army’s observation. This was evident in British commander GEN Thomas Gage’s ability to see COL Prescott giving orders to Soldiers on the fortification.3 On the other hand, Bunker Hill was higher and provided better protection because of the surrounding hills. Also, its distance from the neck of the Charlestown Peninsula isolated Breed’s Hill from the only escape route. This was a disadvantage because Breed’s Hill allowed the British Army an opportunity to flank the Militia and block its ability to withdraw.4 Despite strict guidance from GEN Ward, COL Prescott did not follow mission orders, and consequently, his decision had second order effects on the battle. Primarily, this disrupted the unity of command and significantly altered the plan for reinforcement…

On June 17, 1775, the men on the boats fired their artillery at the hill, firing for twenty minutes at a time (The Battle of Bunker Hill.). British fire, which were randomly being shot toward American forces, were now all aimed at the hill. Hot shot (cannon balls heated before being shot) was fired at Charleston, causing the town to go up in smoke (Dupuy 21). The cannon fodder stopped mid afternoon, and orders from Gage were given to capture Breeds Hill, with rough waters and supply shortage only allowing the order to be given after noon. The British, fully expecting the colonist to flee as soon as they landed at the hill, set out (The Battle of Bunker Hill.). With orders from General Gage, 2,300 soldiers, set out under the command of Major general Howe and crossed the Charles River (The Battle of Bunker Hill & Bunker Hill). The British had planned to land on the far side of the peninsula, so they could attack the colonist backside and avoid gun fire (Dupuy 20). At slightly after 1 P.M. the British landed at the tip of the peninsula. Right after landing, Howe ordered Brigadier General Pigot to Charleston, and four companies over Moulton's hill in order to secure their position. It was right after Howe’s boat touched shore, that he realized things were different (Dupuy…

While the soldiers knew that there would be a battle, no one was prepared for the harsh reality of what would come that fateful day. This battle was fought in three parts, each part beginning after the previous one ended. The first part occurred at the north end of the battlefield in a cornfield just north of Sharpsburg. A first glimpse of the day’s carnage was seen here as regiment after regiment was blown apart, resulting in over 10,000 casualties in this part of the battle alone. When this stage ended in a stalemate, General McClellan launched the next stage, an attempt to take a piece of land known as the Sunken Lane.…

It would be an honor and a privilege to continue my service as a Surface Warfare Officer. I had the pleasure of being assigned to the USS Chung-Hoon during my senior Midshipman cruise. While on the Chung-Hoon, I was tasked with assuming the role of conning officer. I was held to the same expectation as my running mate; I was to have in-depth knowledge of the ship’s navigational capabilities, report for duty fully prepared to assume responsibilities, and, at all times, be diligent when working in unison with the different departments of the ship in order to assure safe navigation. Working with the officers and crew on the Chung-Hoon was the greatest lesson in leadership I experienced, and serves as the point in my life where I knew I was destined to be a warfighter. I know that as a Surface Warfare Officer,…

I was too inexperienced for the First War. I’m in the trenches between the borders of France and Germany. There were many soldiers lying dead on there. It was so wet, moist, and muddy that I saw many of them with necrosis and gangrene on their feet, due to keeping their foot on the trench’s filthy water. They said that this condition was so painful and agonizing that they were forced to amputate them to end the pain. Luckily, I wasn’t many of the soldiers with this infection. I hope you guys are okay, I might come back home alive til the war ends. Love you mom and…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

Proceed from your current location in sufficient time to report by the date specified. You enter active duty upon reporting to unit home station”. These were the words telling me that I was going to Iraq, to fight and destroy the enemies of the United States of America and face one of my biggest challenges yet. Soon after I received my orders in the mail I had a dilemma, what’s going to happen when I tell my mother and the rest of my family? Have I been taking my family and friends for granted, now that I have this situation in front of me I realize that maybe I should have tried…

This is Isaiah Carter. Today’s date is June 5th, 1944. I sit in the battleship waiting for the day to come. The D-Day which should be called. It was in a way devastating and depressing. The mix of feelings coming out of my heart that keeps beating like a car going 100 mph. I took out the old diary that I wrote back in 1898. Looking at the words, I wrote when I was eight. Man, life is really short to a kid who was born in this war era. Before, the actually landing on Normandy, a British general announced, “90 percent of their men expected to die in the landing.” I overheard them talking about this. I know this battle might be my last and on my tomb stone it will be written as Isaiah Carter 1890 - 1944 honorific African American soldier from…

Life in the trenches, during World War I, was a horrible experience for the soldiers of that time. Many soldiers were faced with death during these times. The sources of their deaths were either enemy attacks or their contraction of harmful diseases. Another major obstacle, in the trenches, was of the infestation of rats. Rats, either black or brown, were feared and were nuisances to the soldiers. Brown rats, especially, were detested due to their tendencies to feed on human remains, including the eyes and liver of a corpse. They reproduced at a rapid rate and were viewed in great distaste. A further nuisance was of lice. It was contagious and spread rapidly through the trenches. The cause for this was the filthy environment of the trenches.…
