Personal Narrative: My Field Experience In Early Childhood Education
Introduction
Eileen Kennedy-Moore once wrote, “The path of development is a journey of discovery that is clear only in retrospect, and it’s rarely a straight line.” Although the development to which she is reffering may not be specific, the complexity and sometimes unpredicable nature of children may definitely be summarized by this short quote. As humans, we begin as tiny beings with barely any ability, but, as we grow, we develop into creatures of play and imagination, of right and wrong decisions, and of motivation for the tasks we face in our day-to-day lives. As an Early Childhood Education student, I often have the opportunity to volunteer and to observe a variety of organzations, classrooms, and programs. For this particular class, I was able to analyze a classroom-like environment at the YMCA for children of all ages, and I compared these observations with the appropraite topics of this course.

Field Experience Site
The Athens YMCA is centrally located in the heart of Athens, Georgia, and its main purpose is to serve the local community. It reaches a wide range of diverse people with varying socioeconomic backgrounds, and it offers programs for people of all ages and interests. For my field experience, I worked in the

I blended easily with the other employees because most of them were college students as well. When I arrived at 8:00 a.m., the center only served a few children at a time; however, by 10:00 a.m. the room was filled every day to the max capacity (30 students). As a volunteer, I moreso played with the children, kept them on track for any activities that may have occurred, and even read them a story for storytime. Although I was not able to play a huge role amongst the students, I observed a variety of behaviors of both the students and their leaders that easily connected with the topics of this

At a young age, I waited on the benches for my mother to retrieve me from carpool. I observed my peers laughing together as they walked towards the gym for after-school sports. My mother, who soon arrived to find her kindergarten son sitting in solitude, scheduled numerous parent-teacher conferences. She would share her concerns while my teachers assured her that my "individuality" was what attracted friends to me. I had been a leader rather than a follower regardless of the opinion of others, and, to this day, that has remained static. I have evolved from that careless kindergarten leader, to an aspiring college graduate.…

On Thursday, September 15 at Cohasset Elementary school in Van Nuys, I worked at my practicum site for the first time in a Head Start class of three and four year olds. My goal for this first class was to become familiar with the children and the classroom routine. One of the first things I noticed was that all the children and the teachers are Hispanic and speak Spanish, although the class is mostly taught in English. I experienced a diversity issue between myself and the staff and children in the classroom. The main barrier I faced was the language. Some of the children spoke only English in class, others spoke a mixture of English and Spanish, and some spoke only in Spanish. Speaking some Spanish helped me, but the children spoke so softly…

10'000 hours, WOW! When thinking of these hours it seems like an such a long time doesn't it? It seems as if it will take your entire life to finally reach these hours. However, in all reality it will only take you a max of 10 years if you are a hard worker, dedicated and passionate at what you do. I personally do not think I have yet to reach these hours as an Early Childhood Professional. Although, I believe I have yet to reach these hours I am certain that if I do the math I will either be at 10'000 hours or somewhere close to it. The reason being because I have been in my profession for a little over 7 years. I started out as a Education Aide (five years) working 30 hours a week and worked my way up to Assistant Teacher (one year) and Head…

From the moment I first opened my eyes as an infant, I had no idea that the family that had been raising me was different from me. I couldn’t see myself, and no one told me that I looked any different from them. I just felt like I belonged. The wolves had brought me into their domain as a newborn, and I knew nothing else from the life that I had been living with them. My skin offered no protection from the cold like their heavy fur coats did, but I looked past it. I wore moose and bear skins in the cold months and ran bare in the warmer months. My hands were weighted down with callouses, and my nails were tough and strong. I learned to be strong as a young girl running among them, and though I was called names and made fun of by my peers,…

Working with kids didn’t seem like a big deal at first. In fact, the idea was really intriguing. However, as the time began to bring me closer to the moment, I could feel my heartbeat… every single pound in my chest harder and louder than the previous one. It beats so hard, I thought it might escape my chest. The thud began to echo in my ears, louder than my footsteps against the marble floor. I paused at the doorway, letting my eyes roam the room before anyone noticed my appearance. One last time, my unsteady hands quickly ran down my thighs through my faded light blue jeans. As the door stood towering above me, I let out a shaky breath, closing my eyes. I grasped the doorknob, the cold metal sending a shiver up my already quivering arm. I…

Every morning of preschool was the same. My older sister and I would skip ahead until we were stopped by the gate, that only grownups could open, and had to wait for my mom to let us through. The closer I got to the door, the more the tears began to fill my eyes, completely blurring my vision by the time I had to say goodbye.
