I entered into the new house, it was so empty. I could feel the weight in the air. The cold, frightening new air. I walked over to what is now my parents room, I rolled the sleeping bag onto the carpet, and slept on the floor. Something felt strange, I was sleeping on carpet. Never before had I fallen asleep on carpet. Always on hardwood floor. I recall falling asleep in sorrow, trying to grasp a little bit of hope out of myself. I tried to see the best in the situation, but all I could think about was the people I just left, all I could think about was the past. I couldn’t bring myself to the present. My mind and heart still in Ecuador, my cold body here. This was probably one of the worst moments of my life. I don’t think I have ever cried so much. I don’t think that I’ve ever felt so isolated. I didn’t know who I was. Everything that made me had the reset button pushed on it. All of my pride and courage felt lost. I felt so weak. I needed to become someone new.…

I hat my foster mama so much. Actual mama, why could you have not kept me? Both of our lives would…

The relationships formed in early infancy and childhood create the framework from which all future relationships will be played out. The cement that holds this framework together is called attachment. When children enter the foster care and or adoption system, the bond that was previously formed is broken. At times this occurs due to a birthparents choice to place their child for adoption, but more often this results from abuse or neglect. This abuse or neglect can lead to the development of various forms of attachment disorder. Attachment disorder is a serious psychological illness that without intervention can lead to detrimental and lifelong effects. Children in the foster care system are at higher risk for developing this serious illness and care should be taken to not only understand the disease, but to also find ways to help treat it’s effects.…

It’s taken me a long time to get around to writing this letter. I’ve been putting it off for years, to be honest. I suppose that I was waiting for you to get in touch with me. An unexpected phone call, a surprise letter, maybe even a visit- I entertained the thoughts of these things, when in fact I should have known better. You and mom divorced when I was a child and I never developed any childhood memories of you. My mother moved on and married again (two more times, actually). My step-fathers were never real father figures to me and always seemed like outsiders that never truly took ownership of me. Moms current husband, Dwight has even threatened to kick me out of the house and strangle her if she did not comply or ever tried to leave him.…
