Personal Narrative: My First Year In High School
JaLesa Byes

As the end of my eighth grade year was rapidly approaching and becoming a high school

freshman was coming to reality I had a lot of anxiety and curiosity that I wanted to know about high

school. On January 25, 2012 I was getting out of school and I got the devastating news that my grandma

at age 57, suddenly passed away. I couldn’t believe it, I was in shock just as well as my other family

members were. The moment she passed away I knew that since such a beautiful person that had a huge

impact on my life, that life would start changing.

As I entered my freshman year at East High School, my first year in high school I was filled with

anxiety, edgy, and most of all not knowing what was about to happen. I entered my freshman

participating in my high school’s Student Government to keep me busy. I also participated in a college

preparatory summer academy, Upward Bound. In Upward Bound we did a lot of group activities, having

a more insight about college, and community service opportunities. This summer academy helped

strengthen me in my social skills, group working skills, and most of all opening my mind more to college.

I also participated in a leadership program, the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute. This program

opened my opportunities to more community service activities and most of all to help me strengthen

my leadership skills. After completing the program, I ended up returning as a Graduate Assistant the

next year. As a graduate assistant I helped other participants understand how the program works and

how fundamental it is. Another college prep program that I participated in was, Educational Talent

Search. ETS is a program to help students prepare for college, strengthen study skills, and tutoring

opportunities. All of these activities that I have participated in

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

My grandfather passed away and it sent my family and i into a turmoil. It was so sudden and fast we knew we had to prepare for our future without him. That day was the first day ever that my whole family and I sat in silence. No conversations, No cracking jokes or laughter, just silence. It was a day of sadness, but as the strong family we are, we lifted each other up and we accepted it and we made a promise to each other that we would never leave each other's sides. That day made me realize how much our family is united and this day put our strength to the test and we didn't let it break us. It actually brought us even…

I was able to learn that I can. I can take high school and college classes together. I can manage a social life while at CSN. I can spend countless hours of doing homework and studying without freaking out. I had to have a new understanding of my self; I had to be an adult. The people at my college did not see me as a high school student many of them did not know I attended high school. I also learned about others and how to cooperate better with other individuals. I was able to see an array of different people, something I would not be aloud to experience at a normal high school. Through countless group projects, labs, and group oriented work I was able to out my self in other peoples shoes and see the situation from another perspective.…

I joined a community outreach program where we went to a surrounding town’s housing complex and helped the kids after school with homework. I worked with a student, who when I started was in kindergarten, his name was Jordian. When I first started going he could barely sit still in a chair, he could barely count 5 and was not close to reading. When I left my senior year he would come in and mostly everyday sit and start his homework. He was now adding without much difficulty and starting to learn multiplication. During reading time he would sit down and work on his reading. Helping the kids not only learn but make a positive impact on their lives is something I will keep with me forever.…

For example, after the first year I knew that I wanted to do more in support of victims of sexual violence. This desire, in turn, gave rise to me being much more tolerant and understanding of the varying human experiences and lifestyles. In addition, after the second year, I wanted to take a personal oath to intervene when I see a situation when consent to sexual activity has not or cannot be given. It is from these experiences that I have become a much better person, and I intend to go every year for the foreseeable…

This is my last year in middle school and I would like to spend some of my time participating in what Emerging Young Leaders has to offer. EYL’s workshops alone can help build on some valuable life skills. According to, National Center of Education Statistics, “Extracurricular activities help students engage themselves in school and their work.” If I were to be in this program I would not only be able to engage in school work, but will be able to develop skills that will not only help me now, but when I am older. The leadership skills that these workshops teach will be useful years from now, even after I apply for jobs, and am striving to get a promotion. I will be able to feel comfortable taking charge in whatever situation I am put in and that will make for an excellent candidate.…
