Narrative Essay On Fall River
Fall River, Massachusetts continuously listed in the top 10 most dangerous cities in MA and number 51 most dangerous city in the U.S. This is where I grew up. Reading stories about the city that gave me so much is difficult. I would not be where I am or who I am without it although. I grew up sheltered from a lot of the drugs and violence at an early age as I went to a private school. Even though I did not go to public schools, driving through the city with my mom we always saw the same homeless man on the same corner. I would often ask if we could stop at the subway that we drove by to give him a sandwich. My mom always had a strong dislike for Subway but we would stop and I would get a foot long so I could give the other half to this man that faithfully stood outside. So although I don’t think I understood the magnitude of the poverty and …show more content…
I joined a community outreach program where we went to a surrounding town’s housing complex and helped the kids after school with homework. I worked with a student, who when I started was in kindergarten, his name was Jordian. When I first started going he could barely sit still in a chair, he could barely count 5 and was not close to reading. When I left my senior year he would come in and mostly everyday sit and start his homework. He was now adding without much difficulty and starting to learn multiplication. During reading time he would sit down and work on his reading. Helping the kids not only learn but make a positive impact on their lives is something I will keep with me forever. After graduation and the heartbreak of not going getting into medical school I went home and had to re-discover my love. I knew I was going to apply again because this is what I wanted to do but I had to work harder and find things I love to do in the meantime. I traveled to Tanzania on a medical mission trip where I was able to involve 2 of my

Another example of helping my school community is setting up for Winter Formal. Key Club is a club that accumulates all of the values and ethics of service. In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

The third program I helped with was a soccer tournament that my fellow Bhutanese immigrants organized between teams from other states. As I volunteered there, I helped prepare food for the players, I picked up the trash, and I gave water to the players after the game. The purpose of the soccer tournament was to have fun and enjoy playing sports. I would like to join a soccer team when I go to high school. In the future, I would like to volunteer in a program that helps people who are facing cancer.…

Staffing for Wilderness Trail, a backpacking ministry, I once led a group on a trip on the Appalachian Trail. I was 17, the group was filled with recently graduated high school seniors. I knew I had to make my voice heard if we were going to accomplish anything as a group. I started off timid, afraid to come off as bossy, however once I realized it was my job to make sure this group was not only safe but also thriving. I worked along side the hikers, creating a mutual level of respect. Resulting in a successful week for…

When I started out I really wanted to volunteer at the local school but unfortunately that did not plan out. I always think that everything happens for a reason and working a feed my starving children really made me feel like i was making a difference even when I was doing the small jobs. Feed my starving children is a nonprofit faith based organization that is devoted to feeding the hungry in different countries all around the world. Over the stations they have the names of the places that the food goes to. I did two 5 hour shifts just because it was something I actually had fun with and felt like I could keep going. Something I found really interesting when talking to the workers there was that when they drop the food off they have to be…

On the journey to the Illinois River I couldn’t help to be anything but excited, for it was my first float trip to the Illinois River. Upon arrival to the War Eagle Resort; i exited the vehicle to the refreshing country air and the sounds of children playing, the sound of different kinds of music, and the trickle of the Illinois River; however, I was also hit by the sweltering, hot July air. As my friends and I set camp up I had become excited for the nights festivities, for a big barbeque was planned, we had the beer on ice, the charcoal grill set up, potato chips with various dips, the steaks were seasoned, the chicken was marinated; it was a feast fit for a king. After a long night of drinking…

During spring break of grade eleven I, along with ten others, traveled to Guatemala for two weeks for a service trip. During the time there our biggest project was helping complete the construction of a career school. Our team also worked with the children attending the already open elementary and middle school, and supplying families in need with baskets of food and supplies. The trip to Guatemala helped me gain a better perspective of the world we live in and I am continually reminded of the time I spent there through the two girls that I am sponsoring…
