Personal Narrative: My Gymnastics Program
“How do you feel about moving to Japan?” was the question my mother asked. I was 7-years-old and we were sitting in traffic on the way to gymnastics practice. Little did I know that this question would become my reality in a few short months. There is no other way to describe how I felt about this move, besides absolutely devastated. We lived in Virginia at the time and I was beyond happy. I had great friends, I liked my school, but most of all I absolutely loved my gymnastics program. I suddenly felt as though my whole world was coming to a halt. This was the second time that my Dad’s Marine Corps career had uprooted my life and haphazardly replanted it in new unfamiliar territory, but the first time it was shell-shocking for me. I vividly remember, when we first arrived in Japan, …show more content…
When I first moved, I feared that it would be difficult to make new friends. What I found was a group of kids that were just like me—scared and in a new environment. Soon I had amazing friends and although I missed my old life in Virginia, I was equally as happy in my new one. I became involved with the recreation program which led me to discover my love for cheerleading. I have now been cheering competitively for 5 years, as a result. I matured mentally in a way that I would not have, if I had I stayed in one environment my entire life.
My experiences have molded me into the person I am today. Despite my original aversion to the idea of living in a different country, I would not be who I am today without that experience and I would not change that for anything. Living in Japan, and being a child of the military, I have had many opportunities to grow by experiencing different cultures and extreme diversity. Being forced to move was hard, but it has given me a certain adaptability to be able to survive and thrive in any

I was a Freshman on the Salem Varsity Gymnastics team, and practice consisted of preparing the team for regionals. An unknown pain in my back wound me up in the trainer's office for an hour of the two and a half hour practice. After finishing the season strong, even though I wanted to give up countless times, pushing myself to work through the pain paid off at regionals. Even though I should have stopped because I made the pain and recovery time longer, I refused to give up on my team the week before regionals. The minute season ended, I decided to go see my doctor, he said I pulled a muscle, and the solution was rest, heat, and ice.…

Living in San Francisco with my mother and father was all I had ever known. There were several folks from Asia at my school and I even had classes with a few of them. My father woke me up and told me to come with him to the neighbor’s house since they had a radio. The Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor and the world was now a different place. While the war had been active in Europe for some time it seemed so far away and our lives were unaffected by the battles described in the newspaper and on the radio.…

The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I first discovered what I’m really good at. I came across inspiring Youtube videos of old classic Roller Derby and recent ones that were published only a year ago, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on those quads that I had to try it. In less than two weeks I was a complete natural at skating, I was all about skates. I practiced all the derby stances, exercises, techniques you name it I am absolutely in love with this sport. but as much as I fantasized about doing it I never thought that I’d actually get the chance to be part of their world and have training by the Derby Dames Juniors Freshmeat Association crew, which are ranked the top thirty-one in the united states!…

Most people say cheerleading is not a sport, but to me it is. It all began when I was four years old and my mom signed me up to cheer for the Harrisburg Packers. I was nervous at first, but then it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on the team was tall except for me and one other girl. Her name was Tatum. The first thing I thought was that I was going to get picked on by all the other girls because I was so little and shy, but it turned out to be totally different.…

I strongly believe that giving back to my community/school in one way or another is the most important thing outside of my academics and this is why I want to become an RA. At the age of thirteen, I started my own roller skating classes. Being the instructor of a roller skating class and running the class on my own taught me to be a leader, to grow from my failures and it gave me the opportunity to give back to my community. I learned how to skate in Washington, where my instructors were passionate and enthusiastic for the sport. Their positive energy was so powerful that my love for roller skating continued to radiate within me, even after I made the move from Washington to California. The impact that my instructors made on me and their ability…

If I was a sport, I would be volleyball. I think I would be volleyball because volleyball is a sport where there are players that are on the front line, and there are players at the back that volley and help the offensive players spike and earn points. I think my personality varies between a front line player; outgoing and confident, and a defense zone player; supportive and subdued. I also think I would be volleyball because you can’t play volleyball alone; you need a team. I rely on family and friends as my team, so I can succeed. In volleyball, there are also many rallies in which the ball crosses each side of the net multiple times. I think this represents not only my tendency to be indecisive, but also my search for perfect opportunities.…

The team sport that interests me a lot is track and field because when I was a little girl I joined the sport, and became a great runner. Track and Field are very competitive, but to me, it is a fun sport to act like a horse. The reason I say that is because when I was younger, I would always watch horses, and I would say, “ Only if I was a horse one day.” So I feel like a horse racing to the finish line, and winning so I could be known as the “ greatest runner.” When I see myself at as a horse I feel, so free running in the wind. Track and Field give me a really awesome feeling when I start to run because running feels like real you are able to do anything.…

    My Experience from India

The one foreign country I have been to is India, and it has changed the person I am today very drastically. The last time I visited India was April 2011, and that is when I realized most of the things I did, and it helped me change my outlook on a lot of things. For example, it gave me a completely different perspective on poverty, which is something they have a lot of in India. Living in Canada, I have not seen much of poverty, but after seeing the substantial number of people going through it in India, it made me realize how fortunate we are to be living in a country where it isn’t as big of an issue. Another immense issue in India is the absurd amount of pollution, which is still a growing problem. It is because of the rapidly growing population, which is putting a strain on the environment, infrastructure, and the country’s natural resources. Another unbelievable issue in India is the unemployment, as India is the second largest in population; it also has a larger number of unemployed people. The leading reason for unemployment is again, the increasing number in the population. Also many companies make workers, work for long hours or even overtime instead of hiring new employees. This way they try to save money. The very valuable lesson I learned from all this is, that I am extremely fortunate to be able to live in such an amazing country where we do not have to face these massive issues in our community, environment, or society. It really opened my eyes, to realize to never take anything for granted because I would much rather be living in Canada than anywhere else in the world, and I am very thankful for it. I also know that I wouldn’t have ever been able to realize any of these things unless I would have visited India for myself. That is what I gained through traveling to India, and this is how it changed me as a…
