Furthermore, after hearing that I would get to live with my parents in America, I could not imagine how happy I felt that day. In all that came a dilemma, since an under age child can not travel by himself I needed a guardian to go with me. My aunt solved the problem when she called my grandparents and told them that she would take me with her to the US. Since I did not know my aunt and had never met her before it made an awkward situation for me to go with her, but my grandparents explained, “That she does not live in India, she came from the USA to visit her family in India and now she is heading back, so she is offered to take you with her.” The following week we departed for America. At first it felt kind of hard for me to abandon the place where my life began, but i for my own welfare I got to go to America for a better lifestyle. …show more content…
One of the biggest impacts on my life started after I landed in America.
My biggest challenge was learning to speak English. When I first arrived, I did not know a single word of English. After two months of staying in America, my dad admitted me into a school, even though he knew I could not speak English. On the first day of school I accidentally sat in somebody else's seat, because I did not know the teacher assigned seats. I do not look like the rest of the students, so when they entered the class, they all stared at me in a strange manner. My teacher had to give hand signals to explain things to me, like how to go to lunch, to read books, as well as other
things. I was fortunate to have teachers who would tolerate me because the teacher had hard time teaching me. My teacher ordered a book for me that translated Hindi to English. That did not work out right, though I knew what the pictures and the word meant, but the only problem was that I could not place them in a sentence when I tried to communicate with others. At that time, my dad helped me the most, because he would take time from his sleep to help me do my homework. He made sure that I did well in school. Even today, I still have a problem with English, but today the problem is not if I can understand others or speak fluent English, the problem is grammar and punctuation.
All in all, moving to a new world was not easy because it required me to learn a new way of living and a new language. This move changed my lifestyle for the better. The move was, and will continue to be, the best move of my life.
