Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Certified Teacher
The person I interviewed is R. Wilkinson and she is an educator. She has been in education for 25 years. She started teaching at P.S 268 in Brooklyn and now P.S 52 in Queens. Mrs. Wilkinson was a para-professional and then merge into the education field as a certified teacher. She currently teaches a 2nd grade ICT class. She prefers 2nd grade because it is a grade she’s more familiar with and she knows the curriculum like the back of her hand. She also taught 4th grade to which she also enjoyed but, there is a very big difference. 4th grade is a testing grade and can be very strenuous she says. Mrs. Wilkinson has always dealt with children as far as having nieces and nephews and being very hands on with their upbringing. She has worked

After she figured out she wanted to teach elementary school she went back to college for her masters in education, a fourteen-month degree. Deaton financed her many years of university by working and living at home to save money, as well as scholarships. Deaton went on to say that any kind of small and personal classes were her most enjoyable. She very much disliked large lecture classes, Econ 150 was an example she used. I finally moved on to asking what inspired her to become a teacher. Deaton’s father is a college professor while her mother is a special education teacher, she said that it was always assumed she would become a teacher. However, it did take her quite a bit of time to come to the same conclusion. I believe it was a mixture of many influences and circumstances. Deaton holds a Post Grad professional license pre-k to general education and a common core vocal music license. I asked her what kind of problems she faced at a student teacher she replied that learning how to control a classroom was the most difficult part. We moved on to present day, Deaton’s favorite things about her job are the many possibilities she can take to make a difference in the students…

The student that interested me the most was a student named Justin I believe. He was tiny and wore a big blue shirt I think. Before this year I was always dead set on being a high school history teacher and thought that I never wanted to teach anything else. During the fall semester I was placed in a sixth grade class for my observation hours and at first I was kind of upset about it. Once I experience a middle school classroom I was still on the fence about what grades I wanted to teach, but I figured I would take this course anyway. I am so happy I did because I decided I want to do my student teaching in middle school. I have realized this is such a unique time in children’s lives and I want more of the molding aspect rather than solely teaching like at the high school level. I want to not only educate students in history, but also have it relate to their every…

My educational goals can be said to be broken down into three parts that are really the means to my ends which is the fourth and most important goal. First, Im working on getting good grades in every class, I want to work on having and maintaining a high competitive GPA. My second goal is to get my Bachelors in Political Science in an ideal time frame of two more years. My third goal and one that is out of my hands, one may say, is getting a scholarship. I know there is a large amount of competitive students in the school, who are well deserving of scholarships but I need this scholarship to alleviate my parents from their stress and hard work to keep up with my payments. The last and really my main goal, where my eyes are set and where I,…

According to Michelle Akers, “I think the challenge is, to take difficult and painful times and turn them into something beneficial, something that makes you grow.” Just like every human being, I have had my fair share of challenges to face. My parents were born and raised in Mexico. Being from the type of family both my parents had, education was not an option and no importance was taken toward it. They both dropped out of high school and began to work in factories to help their families with financial problems. They realized how hard it was to earn a living and to maintain a family without a proper education. When I was four years old and my sister was nine, my parents made the decision to send us to Brownsville, TX for a proper American education.…

Life can be a treacherous journey that even the toughest people have trouble making it through. No one, not even the greatest superheros can get through it alone. We all need some sort of mentor. Someone like Mr. Miyagi was to Karate Kid and Athena was to Odysseus. I am no different, a mentor’s job is to lead and guide you through whatever life throws your way. My mentor has done that and much more. Normally it seems most mentors either come from different ethnicities or cultural backgrounds but, not in this case. Me and my mentor share a ton of the same characteristics and traits. Although he is older and much more wiser, we are still close enough in age to experience and enjoy some of the same cultural activities. One of them being checking…

I own learning was associated to reading the research papers of the other M.Ed. students, as well as through the summative evaluation done by my principal. Reading the very diverse research papers, I gain wonderful information of things I could (and will) implement in my classroom with my ELs. Some examples are related to the use of journaling for various learning opportunities, how big is the influence of motivation in relation to Hispanic males finishing high school, as well as the importance of analyzing prescribed curriculum in order to organize scaffolding activities that will assist ELs. The other learning was connected to the summative evaluation in which my principal mentioned things that I have done throughout the year. He was…

My first teachers, pre-school teachers, elementary teachers, and many of my middle and high school teachers were Caucasian. I can count the number of teachers of color that I have crossed paths with during my education on one hand, which is unfortunate. My first teachers were my parents who are Caucasian. My long straight jet-black hair, dark brown eyes, and bronze skin on the other hand, illustrate me as a person of color. Growing up and learning in a Caucasian household and educational system never bothered me until my later schooling. During those years, I began analyzing the diversity surrounding my education. When a teacher of color educated me I felt more at ease. In my mind, these teachers could understand me in a way that my previous…
