Personal Narrative: My Interview With Percy Jackson

When I sat down to interview a young 11 year old girl I didn't expect to receive the answers that I did. She does like to read and she is a very avid reader because she reads at least 30 minutes a day and owns about 14 books. The third question I asked her was the one that I wasn't expecting to get the answers that she gave me. Recently, she has read the entire Harry Potter series and the Percy Jackson series. This was surprising to me because when I was her age I wasn't reading these types of books and I haven't met any 11 year olds who have. These book series are lengthy chapter books that follow the story of two teens who live in a magical world. The Harry Potter series has seven books in total and the Percy Jackson series has three.
Also, she told me that after reading these books she watched the movies and fell in love with the stories even more. After only a few questions into the interview I could tell that this little girl was a passionate reader. Although she has a love for books, she doesn't have a library card.
However, she told me that she does get books from her school library. I asked her if she checked out books from her school library because of a reading program or due to her own interests. She told me that they have a reading program and she has to read so many minutes a night; but that doesn't take away her interest in books that she wants to read on her own time. Other than the book series previously mentioned she wants to read the Little House on the Prairie books. Those books are different from Harry Potter and Percy Jackson because they are more realistic. The topics she said she is interested in were science fiction, folktales, and mysteries. Little House on the Prairie doesn't fall under any of those topics. However, she explained that she wanted to read that series because her mom has told her about watching the show on TV when she was little. Eventually, I think she would end up watching the TV show as well. Then, I asked her if she read the newspaper and she said no she doesn't. She explained that she only has an interest in reading books and didn't think that the newspaper would be fun to read. I agreed with her that the newspaper isn't something I like to read either and moved on the end of the
interview. Towards the end of the interview I asked her what her favorite TV programs were and she said that she had favorite channels: Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. After school, homework, and dinner she said that she watches TV for about three hours, if she isn't reading a good book. The next question asked if she has a hobby and she said that her hobby was fairy gardens. A fairy garden is a small garden of mainly moss or grasses and she adds little objects to it like benches, statues, or gems. The idea is that a fairy will make that their home. Next, her favorite movies right now are all the Harry Potter movies because she just read the book series and loved the movies as well. Also, when she was little she said she did like when people read to her aloud because she liked to visualize the story in her head as she heard it. As the interview came to an end I knew that she would be a lifelong reader. In conclusion, this young girl is a very enthusiastic reader that loves to read fantasy books. To her, reading means that you read a story that you like; and the last thing she mentioned about reading is that it's fun. If it were possible, I believe that she would read all day and I hope that she continues to be just as passionate about reading as she is now.
