Personal Narrative: My Life In L. A.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA had its perks if you liked living in a crowded city with lots of commotion, its downfalls are the many criminal gang activity the streets of L.A are known to have. Growing up in a hostile environment everything I knew and was used to was the gang street life in L.A. Education did not become a priority the possibility of improvement for a better life never crossed my mind. I am the first generation child it was hard to adapt to the American way of living, despite been born here. I only gathered with Hispanic kids who were also the first generation of parents who came from Mexico, Salvador, Guatemala and other places in Latin America. I was never around other ethnicities, not white, Asian, black etc.

I was 17 years old at the time I had to go to a new high school, which I did not like but I had no choice considering I was underage. My first day of school it felt unknown like if I had relocate to another Country. In class half of my classmates were white, the rest were Hispanic and Asian. It was completely new to me something I’ve never encountered in my life prior. As well the students looked much older than their age, I wasn’t sure if it was due to their ethnicity or the environment they live in which made them look like grown adults. Quickly I adapted to the environment because it was new and exciting for myself. I believe I needed a new perspective of life that triggered my curiosity into wanting to explore the unknown. Which resulted in improving everything about myself from making education priority, setting values and goals for myself, and taking part of many hobbies like soccer, and volleyball. As far as embracing my ethnicity and culture. Instead of ignoring my culture I started to read about its history and speak to my parents and ask about their life back in Mexico. Asking questions like what was life in Mexico, the history, school, places, the people they all once knew. I wanted to retain as much as information as I could because every piece of information they told me became special and had a great amount of significance. It also helped me practice

I was not actually raised in the South, I moved to Arkansas about three years ago. Although it’s only been a short time, the experience has changed me. Career choices are much more emphasized here compared to my last school in Sacramento. Professional certifications in anything from Computer Engineering to Cosmetology is offered. It has made me more earnest in pursuing a profession in networking. The environment around here aids in that; Conway is pretty rural compared to Sacramento. Any fun distractions like museums or malls are quite far so I always end up cooped up at home, leaving me to focus better on my studies.…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…

Las Vegas is exactly what I thought it would be in so many ways. I never thought a place could live so fully up to its famous and infamous reputation. From the slot machines to the nudity. Its almost like the entire place just never found its filter. "Southern Hospitality" was null and void and I'm guessing never even heard of let alone considered. Its just the complete rawness was something I'm not used to it at all. In the south everyone is so much more conservative and worried about what they look like in other people's eyes. It just seems like everyone there was so much more worried about themselves and their own lives they didn't have time to be worried with others. There was also this sense of togetherness and understanding. Not necessarily…

The day I found out I would be moving from Roseville to Alpena was probably the worst day of my life. I remember the day I found out about the move. Not only was I really upset because I would be moving away from my friends and family, but I was really scared. We were moving to the middle of nowhere, where I knew not a single person. I would be going into my 6th grade year in the fall, my first year of middle school. My brother and I did everything we could to try to sabotage the move, but sadly our plans failed. Nothing could stop this from happening. Everything I knew… was about to change.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Growing up, most of the children I knew would go to church on Sunday’s, visit their grandparents’ house to bake cookies after school, and have milk and cereal for breakfast every morning. But I had never set foot inside of a religious building, couldn’t even speak the same language as my grandmothers, and ate congee with fermented soy beans like it was the most natural thing in the world. My little town where I’d grown up, made friends, and built memories was, to say the least, completely un-diverse.…

Arriving into the United States was like arriving in a whole different world. Ever since I had arrived to America, my entire perspective has flourished with many different people and their culture. Despite that everybody is from different ethnics, they all coexisted together as one big community. The community allowed me to experience new relationship with people of different race, something I would never be able to accomplish in my old homeland. Everyone around me helped influence my life in many ways, from learning a language, assisting others and participating in fun activities.…

Growing up in an immigrant family shaped my view of life. Neither of my parents achieved their goals of higher education, so they enforced their beliefs on their three children; the oldest daughter (who battles with identity issues), a son (who grew up playing basketball to express his emotions of not knowing his biological father), and last but not least, the youngest daughter (who faces an endless battle of stress and depression). As a result of my parents forcing their beliefs onto their children, a competitive barrier formed around us. As the youngest child, I had to watch my older siblings achieve the most in their schools, while I was left as the “last child” to the rest of my family members; the “last child” to achieve something. They…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

The sound of the ocean is a form of relaxation but for me, I like to call it home. Ventura is a small county located in the southern part of the California and for the past twenty-two years it has been my sanctuary. The other two years of my life I spent in a smaller town called Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. This was my birthplace and home to my parents until they made the decision of migrating directly to Ventura County. Within Irapuato City, there are small ranchos or ranches, located on the outskirts of town and at our rancho, we would raise pigs, goats, cows and, sheep. Surrounding our rancho there are acres of land, where we plant fruits and vegetables to consume and sell to our little community. Life in Mexico is much more rural than…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…
