Personal Narrative: My Major Influences In Life
One of My Major Influences in Life
Who helps you and is always there for you? For me it is my mom, Pam, because she has helped me through the ups and downs of my life, for all 13 years. Pam has lots of knowledge on many topics one of which is volleyball. She played for 26 years before I was born. She took 12 years of my life off until I finally asked her to be my coach. Pam Newberry has shared her wisdom and experience with me by being my coach, being an amazing parent, and having a positive outgoing look on life.
To begin with, Pam has shared her extensive knowledge about volleyball with me by being my coach. She helps me because she can talk to and get through to me in ways others can’t. For example, If I am not doing well and unhappy in some way or about something whe can just yell my name and I most of the time realise what I need to do. She also expects more from me because she knows I can do it. She also pushes me to do my best even when I am having an off day or even an off few minutes no matter what.
In addition, Pam is an amazing parent. She is an amazing parent because she is caring constant and fair. She is caring because when I am sad or getting down on myself she picks me back up and cares about how I am doing in school and in sports.

Pam Newberry has shared her wisdom with many people including me, her daughter, by being an extraordinary coach and a loving parent and also by having a very positive outlook on life. Pam met my dad Aaron at 27 they dated for about a year until my mom said yes and let my dad married her. One reason I play volleyball is because this is how my parents met and they were both number 13 that's now my number. On October 3rd my parent will be married for 19 years. Pam shares what she knows with many but for me she has touched my life in more ways than one. I hope she will continue to turn me into a daughter that is one she and my dad can be proud of

She is one of the only coaches that I have ever had that genuinely cares what kind of people that her players are off of the court. She teaches us to be respectful and caring, while maintaining our grades in school. When I transferred to West at the beginning of my sophomore year, B.R. was the first person to welcome me. She helped me with the transition and made me feel at home with the team. She has also been very supportive with me and some of the health problems that I have had. I have been having knee and joint pain for the past two years and was recently diagnosed with Idiopathic Rheumatoid Arthritis. The process to finding a diagnoses was a long one, but B.R. was there for me through the whole thing. She was always the first person to ask how everything was going and how I was…

As an avid reader, I always understood and appreciated what it took to get that story to print. Especially since I always found it so difficult to take the ideas from head and articulate that point whether it be written or verbal. As the five weeks have passed I am becoming more aware of what my challenges and my strengths are in my writing.…

Before she started the girls’ team, the couch saw her playing and he was amazed by her ability. So, he decided to talk with her family to join his team, and they accepted. Her life changed after she got in to this team. She began to play with girls and they were so good that they went to many competitions, and also she played for her state team for 8 years. Also they went to regionals a couple of times and to nationals too. In high school the team that she used to be with, actually started to separate, and most of the girls moved to other cities. So, the team that they used to be really good wasn’t there anymore. She was one of the girls that stayed in the team, but then there weren’t enough players to have a team. So Danny decided to move.…

I wish as we grew older I could have done more for Pam, after all she did nice things out of the blue for us now and then. Age eleven she sent me a watch on my birthday through the mail. Our relationship was not always kind to each other, she had a way with making you feel worthless as our father did to us. Of course, we totally know how that developed, I believe that is how her murder came about, she had a way with language that could slice right through your soul or I should say, what is left of one’s psyche. Terry’s past I am sure was not kind, with the loss of his mother and a family that should have never accepted him, and he may have been alive…

Playing sports was a huge commit for not only me but my mom. She drives me to and from sport to sport, still being on time. I played ETFC (Eugene Timbers Futbol Club) so we traveled a lot for games. She was at every game, some even in Washington. When we had tournaments she had to pay for hotels and food. I am very thankful for her.…

My actions are always a direct showcase of my personal characteristics. A few that are particularly important are having patience, being non-judgmental, and thinking creatively. I learned a majority of my patience through my position as a research position. Research does not have immediate results; a good experiment takes time. My seemingly menial tasks, such as entering data, eventually contributed to the final product. I learned to be non-judgmental in my time shadowing an obstetrician, where I interacted with patients with so many stories. To judge them would cause a disservice, and potentially harm them. Finally, I learned to think creatively during my time at the Guild for Human Services. Each student was unique in his or her problems,…

Twenty years ago she came into my life and because of her I am a better person. If not for her I never would have been so dedicated and excited to play sports. Thanks to Aim my life revolved around sports and this allowed me to release my frustrations and be a part of team. She once said to me “Teddy your team is an extension of your family and family is all any of us have.” She was the best member any family could ever have and I am honored to call her my aunt. Before she officially became my aunt she was my mentor, my coach and my biggest fan. From her I learned to take pride in my actions, to do my best and to never take people for granted. One time she took me to one of our many wrestling meets and I had to wrestle a girl. I was 13 years old and had been raised to never hurt a female. The girl beat me by points because I couldn’t go all out and I was extremely embarrassed. She consoled me and assured me that it was just a fluke. Then later that day I had to face the…

The advice that was given to me about writing my personal statement is that whatever I wrote, it must be a statement that came directly from the heart. I’ve found that in order to do this, I must actually write about my heart. When I was born, doctors discovered that I had a ventricular septal defect. The defect needed to be repaired, or I would have been wheelchair-bound and not lived past my fifth birthday. The experience of my heart surgery was not only life-altering for me, but for my parents as well. I was their first-born child, and they had just purchased their first home. It is hard enough to learn the ropes of becoming a parent - but to be the parents to a very ill child was something they had never prepared for. They always…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

“You don't have to be a "person of influence" to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they've taught me.” – Scott Adams. I believe that the one person that has the most influence in shaping my life is my grandmother. She has taught me how to be independent and courageous. Many people say that I am a lot like my grandmother because she and I both have very similar personalities and characteristics. By spending majority of my time with my grandmother, I have realized that she is very influential to my life.…

Mr. Stanescu Marcel, my volleyball coach, had a major influence on my life. To start he recruited me to the team and introduced me to the game. He saw that volleyball was something that I was good at and found potential in me. Without him I would have never played volleyball. In addition, he encouraged my parents to make sure that I stayed involved in the sport, as it was something he knew I could go far with. Because of him I went on to play volleyball for many years. While playing for his team I became a top player and we won many championships. Another thing I liked about him was that he understood his students better than most people. He understood where his students came from, who we were, and he knew the best avenue to take us to who we would…

Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…
