“After checking many leads, including the gardener, Louie as well as a homeless man, Raymond and ruled out, they had anything to do with your mother’s murder. Now we are going to the family and friends. I asked you before is there anyone you can think of who would hurt your mother?” “Absolutely not, my mother had many friends, but no enemies.” Marlene quickly answered. “That is a nice painting,” he said, going over to the fireplace to get a closer look at the painting sitting on the mantel. “Thank you, I had it made for my husband’s birthday and he loves it.” “Could …show more content…
I take it down to the station? I promise to bring it back,” he said, staring at Marlene’s painting. “Why do you want to take my picture?” “I think it is so unique. I want to show it to my partner.” Lying was the only way he could figure out to get her to let him take the picture. “Of course, you can take it, but if you don’t bring it back my husband will be coming after you,” she said, impressed the detective wanted to show off her picture. Later he said good-bye and left carrying the picture under his arm, knowing something was wrong and thought he now had the answers.
It relieved Marlene when she learned the police had finished with the house, and gave her permission to get it ready for sale. One morning a neighbor rang the doorbell and said, “My name is Virginia, I live two doors down, and I came over to see if I could help. If you have anything heavy to move my husband said he would help.”
“I appreciate your offer, but I am ready to quit for today, I finally got through the rest of the house. I arranged to have someone buy all the furnishings. After that, I will sell the house. How are you doing?” She asked wiping perspiration from her forehead. “I really liked your mother and if that detective comes to my house once more I’m going to scream.” Virginia said, “I told him everything I know.” “Why does he want to talk with you? Did you see something that might help find the killer?” Marlene asked innocent and curious.
“I am aware of nothing that could help them. The detective asked about the neighborhood, and I told him everything I knew. If I can help in any way, let me know.” “There is nothing to do right now. If I need help, I will call you.”
“Your mother was a good friend of mine. I hope they find whoever murdered her.”
“Thank you. I am worried that someone else might be murdered if they don’t find this animal,” Marlene said.
+++ One morning while dressing one morning to meet Frank at the motel, the doorbell rang. Marlene looked out the window and saw two men dressed in suits standing on the front porch.
Assuming they had news about her mother’s killer, Marlene quickly opened the door. “Good morning, Mrs. Barnes. How are you doing?” “Good morning, I’m fine. What can I do for you?” She said and then asked, “Would you like to come in?” “Thank you, this won’t take but a few minutes,” he said. “They asked us to bring you down to the station. Would you get your purse?”
“I don’t understand why? I told them everything I know.”
“We want you to come with us to answer some questions. We are sure you want your mother’s murderer brought to justice.”
“Of course, let me get my purse, and I will follow you in my car, if that’s okay.
“Sure, go ahead, we’ll wait for you,” the detective said.

While interviewing her at the station, the detective was getting irritated, as he said, “Mrs. Barnes, I have asked three times already, and I am asking you once more. Did your mother confront you about your affair with a man named Frank? Now answer the question!” “Are you insinuating that I murdered my mother if so you are completely out of your ever loving gourd?” She yelled, stomping her feet and losing patience.
“We are going to take that answer to mean yes, you had a confrontation with her regarding the extra marital affair.”
“My affair with Frank was wrong, I should never have let it go as far as it did, but there is no way I would hurt her,” Marlene said and began weeping. “I miss her so much.”
“We have only a few more questions if you don’t mind.”
“Okay,” she said, drying her eyes with a Kleenex, she removed from her purse.
“Did you tell your mother at any time, you would take care of her if she told your husband about your boyfriend?”
“It upset me when Mom talked to me about Frank. What are you trying to say? ” She raised her voice.
“We are only doing our job and you might as well cooperate,” Detective Jackson said, looking at the other detective who had been observing Marlene’s behavior. “We are finished. What do you think,
Larry?”
“I suppose you’re right.”
“Mrs. Barnes, you are free to leave. However, we still consider you a person of interest in her death. We will be in touch. Please, don’t leave town.”
“I’m telling you that I would never hurt my mother. I hope you believe me. Thank you and have a good day,” Marlene said, picking up her purse, she removed her keys and went out the door. Once, Marlene was out of the room. Detective Wallace asked, “What do you think?” “I’m not sure, but she is our lady.” Detective Johnson agreed, and said, “I think we can get an indictment.”
“What do you mean?”
