Personal Narrative: My Norm Violation
For my norm violation, I decided to go out into a public place and briefly interact with complete strangers. To achieve this, I decided to simply say hi to individuals as they passed by me. In picking my location, I wanted to be somewhere with a lot of foot traffic. Ultimately, I decided to go to Fred Meyer on a Saturday, when I knew it would be busier, and start saying hi to unsuspecting shoppers. Even though this was a minor norm violation, it still made me feel very uncomfortable. Each time I went to speak I became nervous and scared people would respond to me negatively. After pushing through the awkwardness, however, and saying hello to large handful of people, I seemed to be getting a handful of the same reactions. People would either

My mother, sister, and I were driving down Highway 124 on a hot July day when my mom screamed and slammed on the breaks. Fear rushed through our bodies. Outside the car window, a short young African American man was launched into the air. As he came down, a loud boom sounded as his body helplessly rolled off the hood of the faint green Toyota Corolla in front of us. The man lay motionless in the road while we waited for what seemed like hours for the driver to exit the car. His red shirt and gym shorts were ripped. The driver of the opposing car threw the vehicle in reverse in a spasmodic action in an attempt to end the man’s life. The injured man made an effort to crawl onto the Wendy’s sidewalk, forcing his body up on the curb to evade the car. The driver drove up onto the curb and blew its tire, just barely missing the wounded man. Realizing the driver would stop at nothing, my mother drove her white suburban in front of the car, blocking the violent perpetrator from doing any further damage.…

I just moved to a kid infested neighborhood. I was 18 so I had no interest in going outside and playing with the 12-14 year old kids. I thought it would be okay moving there, but they're so annoying, doing there kid stuff and writing skate boards which I've done myself and probably annoyed many people so I didn't tell them anything. Anyway my mom lives with me because step dad recently died. This house had been so weird, I don't know if it's me or like I said, the house. There's always weird noises and the weirdest part is that there is this rug that always appears in different places when I get home. My mom doesn't say anything about it because she has bad memory loss and always loses things. Someone needed to do something about this house or rug because i'm starting to get scared and lose it.…

Filled with nervous excitement, my ten-year-old-self ran to the bulletin board eager to discover whether or not he was accepted to the choir. As he read the list of who were chosen, his heart sank; he was not on the list. “Maybe I should give up singing ” he thought; “Maybe my voice is not good enough”. However, he refused to despair; he was determined to achieve his goals despite this failure.…

This was the scare of my life . I was cruising dirt roads in my jeep with a couple of friends, and we weren’t making very good choices that day . we were all drinking beer even though we were only 16, and I decided to try and show off for my friends and drift around a corner . Well needless to say that did not turn out very well at all. We made it around the corner and then i saw a truck coming our direction. So i tried to straighten it out before I should have and we slid out of control and hit the ditch while sliding sideways and hit a fence which caused us to start to tip over but somehow i turned the wheels just right and saved it . After we were back on all four tires we slid across the road and just barely missed the truck…

I stood in trauma room number one with my FFA official uniform on with my heartbroken mother by my side. When I got up that spring morning, I was shaken with nerves because I didn’t feel prepared enough to say a speech at my FFA contest that my chapter was leaving for that morning. That turned out to be the least of my worries that day. I had only been at school for fifteen minutes when I received a call from my mother that my Mamaw BJ, her mother, had passed away. We rushed to the hospital. I stood at the corner of the room so I wasn’t forced to look at the cold, still body that I was used to running up to and squeezing with love whenever I saw it. We stood there for hours and hours and hours it seemed. Her death is one of the most prominent…

For my breaking the norm project I did a quite simple, yet effective action that definitely broke the norm of a regular society. Before I carried out my experiment I made some predictions as to the potential outcomes of what I was going to perform. I went a full day greeting at least two complete strangers in each place I went to in a single day. I went to a grocery store and Dick’s Sporting Goods. I got some mixed reactions that depended on age for the most part. First, I went to a grocery store and tried my experiment there. I first greeted a girl that I assume was around my age based on her appearance. Surprisingly, she was actually very sweet and she replied with the most sincerity I have seen a complete stranger greet me with. I did not expect her to be so cordial…

People come from all walks of life and all have something different to offer from the next person. Unfortunately, sometimes their diversity leads them to being victims of ridicule and criticism. Even I have been discriminated against and put into a category due to my culture and religion. Though I let the criticism get the best of me, I should have just brushed it off my shoulder and realize that what makes me different from others is what makes the world such and interesting place to live in.…

I always knew this notion existed. I always tried to ignore it. Whenever someone in my social circle made an intolerant remark, I would force myself to calm down reaffirming myself that it’s their ignorance talking, that they are just being immature or that they do not understand how pernicious their statements are. Those brief aggressions, that resentful mindset, I came to a point in which I couldn’t take it anymore. I could not just dismiss it again. At some point, I realized I was sick and tired of the materialistic views some of the people in my social environment had. It ranged from dismissing people who did not manage to amass great wealth as lazy to dehumanizing workers.…

I believe that everyone has broken each of the ten laws of boundaries at one point, as it is a natural part of learning where to set and how to continually develop boundaries. The boundary law that I have a difficult time keeping is the law of motivation. I struggle with the law of motivation in many of my relationships including with my friendships, work relationships, and my relationships with some family members. One example of a time where I broke the law of motivation was when I continually did my roommate’s chores because I felt it was a necessary part of being a good roommate. My motivation behind doing my roommate’s chores was not out of kindness, but out of fear of confrontation, and guilt about her getting written up during our room…

I seek refuge in an abandoned building near the hospital because they never check there. It's been almost two days since I've drank or ate anything, everything just goes to my sister. She's sick with some kind of cold of flu. The people at the refuge have been saying that the Americans would soon come to help, but that was almost two hours ago. I hear bombs go off next to a church across the street. I hear foot steps coming closer to us and guns go off, they're in the building now.I'm not sure if it's our heroes or our enemies. They're coming closer, then more bombs as they open the door. They found us, I'll finally be put out of my misery. But then, there are gunshots, the Americans have arrived.…
