Personal Narrative: My Paid Work Experience As A Teacher

I have not had much paid work experience as a teacher previously. However, I was the Lead Police Instructor for a local police department. As the instructor I provided training to other police officers and 911 dispatchers at community colleges and training centers. Additionally, I provided in class instructions to students at local elementary, middle, and high schools. Beyond striving to ensure that students learned the fundamental content of the courses I taught, my objectives as a Police instructor was as follows: (a) to foster critical thinking skills; (b) to facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills; (c) to help students develop evidence-based clinical problem-solving strategies; and (d) to prepare students to function as
highly skilled and competent law enforcement officer and police 911 dispatcher. This experience made the transition into the classroom as a high school teacher easier. I had the experience with setting learning standards, objectives, and lesson plans. I had the experience following a lesson plan, creating test questions, class discipline and management, and time management. This experience allowed me to identify and disseminate instructional strategies to ensure that students learn about the courses I taught. One of my objectives for providing instructions in the classroom as a police officer and Police Instructor was to discuss interpersonal skills and cultural diversity. My message was to address soft skills such as active listening and how greatly it affects how people feel and respond. My goal was ensure that the students understood the value, appreciation, and motivation its takes to achieve goals. As a police officer and director, I understood the importance of the following: self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and relationship management. These traits are essential parts of a successful journey from high school to the workplace. Students must be disciplined, responsible, and dependable and have the highest integrity to be prepared from workplace to be successful. As a police officer, I valued the importance of emotional and social skills in the workplace. My class structure is set up to ensure students value the importance of emotional intelligence for be successful in the workforce.
