This particular trip we decided to go on a trip to Kailua, Hawaii. If you have ever been to Hawaii you would understand what I mean when I say there is something in the air. When you walk out side the air is lined with a wonderful tropical blend of ocean breeze, mangos, and a balmy smell of sunscreen and sunshine. One particular day we decided to go on

Traditions are customs or beliefs handed down through a family and sometimes created without even realizing it. The routines or foods shared when we come together are repeated and become a part of who we are. A detail made clear, a few weeks ago, as my daughters and I shopped for groceries the day before our Super Bowl gathering. As we grabbed chips, dips, sodas, baked beans, chicken, and barbeque sauce, one of my daughters said, "Don't forget the ingredients for 'Mom's ChickenEnchiladas'." I never realized, until then, that it had become a traditional dish served at all our family functions.…

It's hard to not know anything about me because I'm pretty much an open book. But if I had to think of something that most people wouldn't know about me it would be that I was born and raised in Hilo. All my life I lived in Hilo up until my freshman year when I moved to Kona. Right now I'm currently a senior attending Konawaena High School. With that being said, I lived on the Kona side for about 4 years now. The main reason for me moving to this side was because both my parents have jobs out here. My dad, being a manager had already been working out on this side as well as on the Hilo side. My mom on the other hand, got a job promotion that had to be taken in Kona.…

Back when I was a littlun, my daddy worked in the meat factory and mama stayed at home cleaning the house and making me my dinner. My parents wanted me to be a smarty, so they made me go to school. They also said I was a good singer, so I decided to join the boys choir. Me and my best bud Charles would go down to the river to skip rocks, but sometimes we would go play chicken on the railroad tracks. Sometimes daddy would say “Stephen, wanna come a huntin with me?” and I would tag along behind him while he hunted for pheasant. I never really listened to daddy’s rules, so he decided to send me off to some fancy boarding school. It was at this point in my life where everything started taking a turn for the worst.…

The work on the plantations is very exhausting, and I wish I could move back to Shanghai in China. There are other ethnicities here like Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese, but I usually talk with the other Chinese immigrants. Apparently, there is another language called Pidgin that everyone speaks so they can understand each other. How is everyone else doing over the past 10 years that I have been gone? I hope everything has been fine back in China.…

I have spent days in the Hawaiian Islands educating Hawaiians about Christianity and it is no vacation. I have grown taller from when you have last seen me, but I do look very different. My hair is now a light brown from the exposure of the scorching sun, my body has become frail and scrawny from the lack of food and nutrients on my journey, and my attitude towards events has changed and I am more aware and sensitive to my peers aboard the ship. I have suffered sea sickness and have witnessed many deaths while sailing to the island, either from the lack of food or health. Here in the Hawaiian islands isn’t all that bad though. I have met many friendly Hawaiians and we are slowly starting to understand each other. However, aside from the welcoming Hawaiians, the scenery is something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I could have spent my whole day here with my hands and feet engulfed into the grainy sand while watching the sparkling, blue…

The day I left for ASU was in 9th May. I was so excited because I could start my college life. The flight to Arizona was at 4:15 pm. I woke up at 8 am to pick up all my stuff to my luggage and call a car to take me to the airport. After two hours later, my parents, they woke up and prepared the dinner for me. The food were very delicious. The car arrives at 1:00 pm. I arrived at airport at 1:45 pm. The airliner took off on time. In the meantime, I carried the fear of unknown further because everything was unpredictable. How is the ASU? How is the class? How is my dorm room? How is my room? How is class? All the thing about the collage could not stop running through my brain. After 16 hours, I finally arrive at AZ. The first feeling when I…

I am sure it happened as easily as this: We were sitting around the garage shooting the bull during a cold winter snap. Thoughts turned to motorcycle rides and things spring and summer. For once, it wasn’t me. Mrs. K was the one to mention going to California. We hadn’t taken a trip the summer before, and she said, “We ought to ride to California and take the PCH along the coast.” Probably, no one jumped up and started packing, but several certainly starting thinking. One mention leads to another mention which leads to final plans. For me, it was a dream I have had since I watched Then Came Bronson and spent my time reading On the Road. For all of us, we researched the trip and found places and things…

“A tradition is a belief or behavior passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past”. It is the existing knowledge that we got from our parents; and parents got it from their parents, and so on. Tradition represents culture. These two words are inter-connected. Without tradition, there is no culture and vice-versa. These words bring us the meanings for our life and make us who we are. We behave based on how we were raised and taught by our parents, their parents, and so one. We…

We are surrounded by tradition in our lives, whether we take the time to notice it or not. Christmas is a religious tradition, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary schools is a centripetal national tradition, and visiting a particular place every year may be a family’s tradition. No matter what we do, or where we go, there will almost always be some form of tradition around. So, why should we get rid of any type of tradition? Tradition can be proved to be evidently essential today based on remembering important dates and events, culture lasting through generations, and bringing families closer together.…

When I think of tradition, I think of something that I do a lot. Some of the traditions that my family and I have are celebrating holidays and birthdays. The story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is about a tradition that is falling apart, just like the black box itself. The black box is used as a symbol of death. People are afraid of the black box. When the lottery is not being held, the black box is abandoned and not taken care of. Many of the villagers seem like they want to give up the lottery, and get rid of the black box.…

How many people can say that they were offered and all-expense paid trip to Hawaii for two weeks? Last summer my grandparents paid for my whole family to come to Hawaii with them and stay on the island of Oahu for one week and The Big Island for another week.
