Personal Narrative: My Trip To Texas
On Saturday April 13, 2013 I was walking through the parking garage on the USAA campus in San Antonio, TX to start my 4 hour work shift, I began to go through the turnstile and seemingly startled awake a bat. This bat began to fly and squeal in fear. It darted at my head getting caught in my hair a couple times. I started to scream and flail my arms about trying to fend off the nocturnal flying mammal in fear. During what seemed to be forever I was able to unlock the turnstile and exit the entry way but not before rupturing two discs in my neck. This incident caused quite the turn of events in my life. I had been working for USAA for 3 years and truly loved it there. I also lived in a beautiful apartment with my mother and two children and …show more content…
My life seemed to be going downhill faster than that bat that flew straight for my head. For about a year I lived in misery, living the life of a victim. Blaming everyone and everything for all that was going wrong with my life. I had lost what I thought was everything, my children, my home, my job and even stopped going to church. Then one day a friend of mine asked me to ride with her to a nearby town where her friend had just moved back from Dallas to. I reluctantly said yes and went on the hour drive to the middle of nowhere town. As we pulled up to the house of her friend I saw a beautiful young woman sitting on a wooden rocking chair with her arms in the air waving us down. Once we parked we sat on the porch with the friend and listened to her speak about all the great things God had been doing in her life since she surrendered all to Him. I sat there listening and arguing with myself on what it was I needed to do to get my life out of the rut it was in. I looked up at her and she caught my eye and said to me “God has called you to great things Katie, He just asks that you trust

Trash, garbage, junk, debris-all alternatively known as litter-scattered across the 268,597 square miles of Texas on our highways and landscapes. Where former First Lady Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson aspired to see bright and colorful wildflower blanketing the great Texas countryside, oftentimes we only see disturbing amounts of garbage. This is what I aim to change. Through my school's Key Club I have had the opportunity to have a positive impacts in reducing the "over 435 million pieces of visible litter" covering "our empire wide and glorious." In the thirty-eight total service hours I have dedicated to both Texas Adopt-A-Highway and school wide recycling the amount of litter that myself and the generous volunteers…

It was a bright, beautiful day in Texas when all of a sudden, I heard gun shots. My crew and I were in the second car behind the president and the governor of Texas along with their wives. Everyone was applauding and cheering, having a wonderful time. I, Bob Walker, was looking out of the car window watching everything that was happening. I then heard *boom, boom, boom*, I thought it was fireworks until another secret service man anxiously say “the president has been shot!” All of us piled out of the car and I ran and jumped on top of the president hopefully shielding him from any further injuries.…

My significant event is about my sixth grade trip to the Woodlands. It was right before the school day started, and the sky was blue and clear. After everyone was accounted for, it was a brief bus ride up the road to the Woodlands. Although I was nervous about going, that all went away because it was a beautiful day to bask in the woods, and socialize. The first day we were there, we were initiated, and we had to create woodsey nicknames for ourselves. We all hung out together outside the Mess Hall and enjoyed the sun.…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

I learned that when you really want something sometimes you have to put yourself out there and take a risk. I realized this when it came time for me to go to college. I entered school in August of 2009 and did not focus on my studies. After just one year my GPA was a 1.376, because I did not have the drive that I had in high school to succeed. After a couple of years away from Texas Christian University, while attending a 2-year college, I realized what I wanted to do with my life, sparking the motivation I had been searching for. I then decided to return to TCU and fix my awful GPA, which I managed to do with hard work, determination, and appropriate priorities. After one year of nonstop studying and focus, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 2.777, removing myself from academic probation and qualifying for opportunities I was not eligible before. This was difficult for me because I also work part-time…

Let me start off with my mother's journey to America. It was 1985 when her parents decided it was time for a fresh start. It was very difficult to come to America legally, so they made their journey by traveling to other countries. They left Cuba and traveled to Spain where my grandfather found a job as a farmer. They lived in Spain for almost 2 years before they gathered enough resources to travel to Mexico. The journey from Mexico to the USA was very easy for them because they had a family member who knew their way around. They struggled for many years in America but soon became legal citizens. My mother later on went to college and completed her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Miami. My grandparents purchased the…

There’s a lot of great things I saw on my trip to Galveston, Texas. My favorite place there was the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, while I was there I got on the roller coaster… that was very interesting. There was kids scared to even get on it because a lot of different people were saying things about it. It was “scary” or maybe “you’ll fall off of it”, I was frightened. From far far away you can see the ships when you were around the beach. They looked sketchy, but, whenever I looked at it from far away I thought it was something else. I was on the beach and I was so scared because one of my good friends shot me a text and said:“You realize you’re at a place where there is sharks and a kid died there because of it a few weeks ago”.…

Living in Texas most of my life I was no stranger to Americans who either didn’t speak English at all or whose first language wasn’t English. As I interacted with people, mostly from Mexico, I had a hard time understanding why they didn’t want to speak English . Although I’m ashamed to say it, I often viewed these people as less educated and meek. A statement that Ive heard all to often is that people who don’t speak English should learn our language or leave America. However, I’ve never considered myself racist or close minded, despite the fact that I often felt frustrated and uncomfortable while trying to interact with people whose first language wasn’t English. Being on the other side of this situation forever changed…

Most days I came home to an empty house but I learned to care for myself and I grew up, maybe before I was ready. Friends, sports, hobbies, school and work consumed most of my time. One of my best friends was a boy named Jacob, who pushed me to enroll in the most challenging classes and make the best grades possible. We were competitive, but we both wanted each other to do the best imaginable in everything. Every chance I had, I spent it with him and his family. An empty house no longer consumed my afternoons. Mid sophomore year, Jacob died in a car crash, a car that I almost got into. My world seemed over, including my grades, as if I needed him to make the marks I had before. Returning to the grades and personality that I had before seemed somewhat impossible. However, I knew there was a reason that I did not get into that car that day, I had a purpose. Life seemed to be full of gaps, yet God began to fill them. To this day, every test I take, everything I do, I imagine both Jacob and my father sitting beside me, telling me to live out my purpose, whatever it may be. My top competitor was gone, but I gained an angel that day, one who is by my side in everything I do. Although there existed a period that I struggled, I overcame…
